Falken Tire Pikes Peak International Hill Climb
Wednesday Morning Practice Notes
. Trevor Stewart went off course with his Mini Sprint car on the lower section during morning practice. He says he took a corner too fast at about the 8.5-mile point. His car went off the road and into a ditch. He says his momentum caused the car to somersault once and pirouette once before it came to a stop. Although the engine and transmission did not appear to be damaged, the extensive body damage will require him to bring another car to the mountain tomorrow for qualifying. He originally planned to bring another car of his own, but will instead use a car owned by a different team.
. Driver Dave Wood will switch classes for this year's event. He originally registered to race in the Open Wheel division. But after having problems with that car he will instead race a different car in the Mini Sprint division.
. Driver Andrew Hawkeswood had a big problem with his car. Hawkeswood, who lives in New Zealand, says a paperwork issue kept his car stuck in Los Angeles/Long Beach US Customs port. Although the issue was resolved by Friday, his car stayed in the port over the weekend. Members of his team stayed in California and will arrive Wednesday night with the car. To get some time on the mountain, Hawkeswood borrowed a car from local driver Brant Ford for Wednesday practice. He says his team will work on the car overnight and he will go out for qualifying Pikes Peak Open Division Thursday. This is his first year racing on Pikes Peak.
