Pikes Peak Speedweek Presented By Rocky Mountain Ford Stores Should Prove Bigger and Better in Year Two
Fountain, CO - May 26, 2004 - Falken Tire Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and Pikes Peak International Raceway today announced plans for the second annual Pikes Peak SpeedWeek presented by Rocky Mountain Ford Stores. This unique partnership between the two racing entities, El Pomar Foundation and the Colorado Springs World Arena is designed to promote motorsports as a mainstream entertainment category.
"The success of the inaugural year of SpeedWeek was above and beyond what any of us could have dreamed of," said Ed Sauer, chairman of the board for Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. "The exposure both the Falken Tire Pikes Peak Hill Climb and the Kings Soopers Rocky Mountain Classic at PPIR received was tremendous. Add to that the fact that over 20,000 people attended the downtown Fan Fest made SpeedWeek a huge success for everyone involved."
Pikes Peak SpeedWeek presented by Rocky Mountain Ford Stores 2004 will run from Friday, June 23 through Sunday, July 4th. In addition to two of the community's cornerstone motorsports events-the Falken Tire Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and the Kings Soopers Rocky Mountain Classice featuring USAC and ASA Series Races at PPIR along with the largest fireworks show in southern Colorado, SpeedWeek will again include the downtown Fan Fest featuring Moto X-Treme freestyle jumpers, a national firefighters chili cook-off benefiting MDA and display vehicles from The Great Race; a downtown bike rally with live music; the return of sanctioned Soap Box Derby Racing; a golf tournament benefiting MDA and a downtown autograph session featuring USAC Sprint Car world record holder Jay Drake and teammate Dave Steele. A detailed calendar of events can be found at www.ppihc.com or www.ppir.com.
"Last year our collaboration with community and industry leaders like PPIHC, the World Arena and El Pomar Foundation proved that motorsports is a viable form of entertainment," said Rob Johnson, president of PPIR. "We see SpeedWeek continuing to grow as an annual tradition and proving that the Colorado Springs area is the hub for motorsports in the Rocky Mountain Region."
Ongoing support of motorsports and the addition of the Pikes Peak Speed Week annual tradition is extended by El Pomar Foundation through dedicated display space at the Penrose House for PPIHC memorabilia and race history artifacts.
"The Hill Climb is an important part of the Penrose legacy," said Bill Hybl, chairman and CEO of El Pomar Foundation. "Mr. Penrose, who had a passion for automobiles and a penchant for grand festivities, was instrumental in building the Pikes Peak Highway in 1916 and founding the 'Race to the Clouds.' Speed Week will certainly rekindle that excitement."
SpeedWeek Chairman Lou Melini said, "It's become quite evident as the second annual Pikes Peak SpeedWeek presented by Rocky Mountain Ford Stores draws near that a lot of excitement has been generated over the last 12 months towards motorsports in the Rocky Mountain Region. Being able to see the community pull together its support of the Falken Tire Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and the King Soopers Rocky Mountain Classic featuring USAC and ASA Racing has been quite rewarding. We feel SpeedWeek already has become a tradition that will last well into the future."
