Mike Ryan ready to regain title at Pikes Peak: Big Rig teammate, Morter, captures new title as "Mom",
CHICAGO (May 28, 2003)--Mike Ryan, driver of the No. 77 Freightliner Unlimited SuperTruck and five-time champion at Pikes Peak, is ready to defend his 2002 title as he makes his seventh run up the famed mountain June 28th. Reigning Pikes Peak Rookie of the Year, Molly Morter, will take a year off to compete for "Mother of the Year. "
With a dramatic crash and roll at the finish line in 2002; Ryan broke his standing class 8 record with a fast time of 13:21.4.
"We had quite a year in 2002, both of our trucks ran extremely well," said Mike Ryan, driver of the No. 77 Freightliner SuperTruck. "Molly took home Rookie of the Year honors and I put my fifth championship title under my belt and broke my standing record. I really can't ask for more than that. I can't wait to get back on the mountain."
With a month to go, Mike and the Mike Ryan Motorsports Team are ready to battle once again on Pikes Peak Mountain during the "81st Race to the Clouds."
"We've made some major changes on the No. 77 Freightliner," continued Ryan. "My goal was to get as much weight off the body as possible. We've reworked the suspension, steering and brakes. We also changed the gearing and are trying out some new Michelin tires during our test period June 4th- the 6th.
Molly Morter, driver of the No. 33 Sterling and 2002 Pikes Peak Rookie of the Year, has taken a year of from racing to start a family. Morter, and her husband Steve, had Susanna Caroline on March 24th in Chicago, Ill.
"I thought nothing in the world could ever compare to racing Pikes Peak," said Morter. "Having a baby comes pretty darn close. I will definitely miss competing this year, but I am confident I will be back on the mountain some day. I wish Mike the best of luck and will be right by his side cheering him on."
Ryan's race-modified Freightliner Century Class features a race version of the Mercedes-Benz 501 V-6 twin turbo that produces up to 1,450 horsepower as well as riding on Michelin X-1 tires, Accuride wheels, a Meritor rear axle and Shell Rotella T oil. The 7800+ - pound big rig saw speeds of up to 96 miles per hour during the Pikes Peak race.
The semi-trucks are one of the most popular classes among spectators who attend the race. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is on a 12.42-mile racecourse, which is comprised of 156 turns.
Ryan's unique experience of hi performance and stunt driving with semi-trucks has also led him into several ways to share his knowledge with others in an effort to educate people about semi-trucks and safety. In addition to his work in film and television, Ryan frequently reconstructs accidents, often serving as an expert witness in cases involving traffic collisions. In 1998, he began speaking to drivers in truck fleets on safety and accident avoidance maneuvers for semi-truck drivers.
