NARRA announces new US GT Championship

NARRA Announces New Series: The US GT Championship.

The North American Road Racing Association, promotor of the highly successful Viper Days driver education and race events including the Dodge Viper Cup pro series, has announced the introduction of the US GT Championship.

Beginning next month with the inaugural round at Road Atlanta, February 25-27, the championship will be contested over eight rounds at some of the nations most prestigious tracks including Sebring, VIR and Daytona. It is an expansion of the existing Viper Racing League and will be open to all GT styled 'closed wheel and doored' sports cars.

Power-to-weight ratio will be used to place cars in one of three classes; GTR-2, GTR-1 and GTR-Unlimited. To ensure cars comply a dyno report submission is required and cars will be weighed during the event. NARRA will patrol the legitimacy of these figures by acquiring GPS data.

The US GT Championship will be the centerpiece of the 2011 race program and cements the future strategy for Viper Days and the North American Road Racing Association.

"Our vision is to take what is so great about Viper Days and offer it to everyone with a GT sports car," said Tom Antonelli, NARRA Director, Viper Competition Coupe owner and 2010 Viper Racing League competitor.

"The US GT Championship is our final step in the progression between DE (Driver Education) students and the pro racers of the Dodge Viper Cup.

We expect to see gentleman and professional drivers and teams field a variety of Porsche, Ferrari, Corvette, BMW and Lamborghini cars, and of course Dodge Vipers.

Our philosophy for the US GT Championship is simple; minimal rules. Provided it's a GT car you can 'run-what-you-brung'. We'll place you into the best class for a highly competitive, safe and fun race weekend."

Antonelli sees the US GT Championship as a natural progression of the highly regarded Viper Racing League and one fully supported by long-term partner Dodge.

"Given the success of the Viper Racing League, expanding it to invite all makes and models for the US GT Championship is logical and exciting.

Viper Days will always be the core and at the heart of NARRA. As with all NARRA board members, Viper Days has been my playground. I have progressed through the ranks, as have so many other Viper drivers, and NARRA will always be our home.

Dodge supports our move and we recently announced their renewed partnership with NARRA. Our driver education program is recommended by Dodge and Viper clubs throughout America and we continue to be the home of the Dodge Viper Cup pro series.

We are focused on creating the best venue for all drivers of GT sports cars, exotic and homegrown, whether they be novice students, club racers or pro drivers.

With the US GT Championship we are sharing the sportsmanship, camaraderie, value and fun that has existed between Viper owners for so long to owners of all marques."
