PROTOTYPE TECHNOLOGY GROUP BMW M3 TEAM - SATURDAY, AUG. 7, 1998 Mosport Festival at Mosport Park, Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada
PTG BMW M3S QUALIFY FASTEST IN GT3 AND GT2 Bill Auberlen qualified the #10 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 four-door to the GT3 pole and PTG teammate Marc Duez put the #6 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 coupe on the GT2 pole today for Sunday's 2-hour, 45-minute Mosport Festival at Mosport Park near Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada. Auberlen's recorded a fast lap of 1 minute, 24.255 seconds (an average of 105.06 mph) over the 2.459-mile Mosport road course, edging the #23 Porsche RSR by three-tenths of a second for GT3 honors. He'll start ninth overall and will co-drive with Mark Simo. It was Auberlen's fifth consecutive GT3 pole here at Mosport Park. Ross Bentley, sharing the #1 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 four-door with Peter Cunningham this weekend, recorded the third-fastest GT3 qualifying time of 1:25.755 (103.22 mph). Duez's pole-winning time in GT2 was 1:24.622 (104.61 mph), almost a full second faster than the #04 Porsche 911 Turbo that will start second on the GT2 grid. Duez will start Sunday's race in the #6 PTG BMW M3 and will turn the car over to Auberlen for the finish. Auberlen will start the #10 PTG BMW M3, pulling double duty because PTG regular Boris Said is racing in the NASCAR Winston Cup event at Watkins Glen on Sunday. Race time Sunday is 2:45 p.m. EDT. It will be broadcast by Speedvision later this month.
BILL AUBERLEN, #10 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 Four-Door (GT3) - "We're concentrating really hard on winning GT3 on Sunday. We'll have a good battle with the (#23) Porsche. We were trading tenths all day long in practice and qualifying and it took a good effort to come out on top. The BMW M3 is absolutely phenomenal. From the moment we unloaded it off the truck for testing on Thursday, we've hardly had to do anything to it. What was neat Thursday and Friday was that we were exceptionally quick in the rain while the Panoz cars and the World Sports Cars were having a hard time. So, personally, I hope it rains tomorrow!"
MARC DUEZ, #6 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 Coupe (GT2) - "We have a very good handling car all the way around the track. The BMW M3 gives up a little bit to the Porsches on the back straight, but we make up the difference with a very balanced car. I'm looking forward to running a very strong, consistent race tomorrow."
ROSS BENTLEY, #1 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 Four-Door (GT3) - "We made huge progress today. We had a few handling problems that we needed to get sorted out that we couldn't get into because of the rain the last two days. The guys made a good call on the direction we went for qualifying and it made a big difference compared to this morning's practice session. Overall, we're about a session or two behind because of the rain. But, that's all behind us. We definitely have a good race car. If it rains for the race, we'll be brilliant.'
