PROTOTYPE TECHNOLOGY GROUP BMW M3 TEAM - FRIDAY, AUG. 7, 1998 Mosport Festival at Mosport Park, Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada
PTG BMW M3 ON TOP AFTER WET DAY OF PRACTICE AT MOSPORT PARK Bill Auberlen recorded today's fastest GT3 lap in the #10 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 four-door today in practice for Sunday's 2-hour, 45-minute Mosport Festival at Mosport Park near Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada. Auberlen toured the 2.459-mile road course in 1 minute, 28.691 seconds (an average of 99.811 mph), some two seconds faster than the next-fastest GT3 competitor, the #22 Porsche RSR. Auberlen's time was the fifth fastest time overall as a steady drizzle that fell most of the day plagued the higher-horsepower World Sports Cars and GT1 competitors. Auberlen, back atop the SPORTS CAR GT3 driver's standings after the first four events this season, is co-driving with Mark Simo this weekend. Simo is second in the driver's standings. Meanwhile, the #1 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 four-door or Peter Cunningham and Ross Bentley was third in GT3 today with a time of 1:33.777 (94.398 mph). And the third team car, the #6 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 coupe of Marc Duez that is competing in GT2 this weekend, recorded the second-fastest time in class at 1:35.296 (92.893 mph).
SAID TO MISS THIS WEEKEND'S ACTION AT MOSPORT Boris Said, listed as co-driver with Marc Duez in the #6 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 coupe this weekend, is co-driving instead with Jimmy Spencer in Sunday's NASCAR Winston Cup race at Watkins Glen, where he qualified fifth today. He'll also be racing in Saturday's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event in Flemington, N.J., driving a truck co-owned by Ernie Irvan and PTG teammate Mark Simo. Duez's co-driver in Sunday's race here will be one of his four other available PTG teammates.
BILL AUBERLEN, #10 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 Four-Door - "A lot of people might consider a day like today a waste of time. But we really haven't had much of a chance over the years getting to learn about our BMW M3s and our Yokohama tires in the rain. So we took the opportunity with the weather here to learn about what the car and the tires like and dislike. It's amazing that our PTG crew is so good that they set the cars up where they thought they should be, and they turned out to be almost right on the money from the very start. This is my favorite track, and it shows because I've been on the (GT3) pole here four times in a row. It's a track that you have to grab hold of and take charge of because there are serious consequences if you don't. That's why I like it so much. It separates the people who can go at full speed from those who can't."
MARK SIMO, #10 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 Four-Door - "I don't have a whole lot of experience in the rain, so I'm fortunate the last couple of days (including during Thursday's open test day) to get a lot of time in the car in the wet. I'm just trying to be patient and not get carried away because this track can jump out and bite you when you least expect it. I might not be the hot shoe on the team surrounded by all these experienced drivers, but I'm moving up steadily. Patience is the key."
PETER CUNNINGHAM, #1 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 Four-Door - "These BMW M3s are just awesome in the wet. The balance and the PTG crew's setup are confidence-inspiring. If it rains on Sunday, I think our cars will have a very good chance at not only winning our class, but also flirting with the overall leaders. (NOTE: Cunningham recorded the fastest practice time overall in the very rainy first session of the day, with PTG BMW M3s also sitting in second and third. Cunningham is a three-time ice racing champion and a former rally champion.)
