LAMBORGHINI SHOWS UNSTOPPABLE SPEED AT LAUSITZRING

The Lamborghini-equipped Reiter Engineering team dominated rounds nine and 10 of the ADAC GT Masters at the Lausitzring, Germany, on 13-15 August 2010 by claiming both pole positions and a double victory. Albert von Thurn und Taxis and Peter Kox finished on top in every session of the weekend in the #24 Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 to open a commanding lead in the Drivers’ Championship.

Reiter Engineering proved to be the team to beat from the offset, recording the best times in both practice sessions despite running on used tyres. In Friday’s first qualifying session, German driver von Thurn und Taxis set the fastest lap time of 1:21.628 to claim his second pole position of the season. Dutch pilot Kox topped the timesheets in qualifying two with a fastest lap of 1:21.670, over three tenths of a second clear of the competition, allowing the pair to start both races at the front.

Round nine got off to a challenging start as heavy rain left the track wet and slippery. In the difficult conditions von Thurn und Taxis managed to keep the Porsche of Sebastian Asch behind in the opening stages and pulled away from the pursuing pack to gain a 10-second gap before handing over his team-mate Kox. The Dutch driver stayed in the lead and crossed the finish line first, nine seconds ahead of Audi R8 drivers Christopher Mies and Jens Klingmann in second and third.

The Reiter Engineering pair maintained its dominant form while the weather conditions improved for Sunday’s round 10. Kox started the race behind the wheel of the 560 hp Lamborghini Gallardo first and stayed ahead the Porsche, BMW and Audi challengers. The former 24 Hours of Le Mans class winner pitted in the lead, allowing von Thurn und Taxis to continue the victorious charge. The German, self-proclaimed ‘Lamborghinista at heart’, pushed hard in the closing stages as Porsche driver Tim Bergmeister challenged him for the lead. Von Thurn und Taxis defended well on his way to the chequered flag to claim the team’s fourth victory of the season, with Bergmeister’s Porsche and Toni Selier’s Corvette rounding out the podium places.

Kox and von Thurn und Taxis are jointly leading the Drivers’ Championship with 63 points and have strengthened their title challenge by increasing the gap to 16 points ahead of the second-place duo of Ludwig and Mies. Reiter Engineering’s superb performance over the weekend elevated the German squad to the top of the Teams’ Championship, tied with Abt Sportline, on 65 points despite only collecting points with one car, while other teams score points after two. Von Thurn und Taxis set a new series record by finishing on the podium for the 20th time in the history of the championship. Reiter Engineering holds the record for the most series race wins with 17, while the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 has secured 19 victories to date, more than any other race car since the ADAC GT Masters was launched in 2007.

“It’s a fantastic feeling to achieve this result,” said Hans Reiter, Team Principal of Reiter Engineering. “The competition is very strong: we were up against two teams who also compete in DTM but we defeated them. We have gained a lot of experience from racing with Lamborghini cars in different series and this has benefited us. Our drivers Albert and Peter made no mistakes and we had the best driver pairing of all the teams at Lausitz.”

Rounds 11 and 12 of the ADAC GT Masters will take place at the Nuerburgring, Germany, on 29 August, partnering the FIA GT1 World Championship.
