LAMBORGHINI CLAIMS THIRD ITALIAN GT CUP VICTORY
Media information: 28 September 2010
Lamborghini secured pole position and a victory at the penultimate race weekend of the Italian GT Cup, held at Vallelunga, Italy, on 25-26 September 2010. MIK Corse SRL drivers Giorgio Sanna and Davide Stancheris battled against strong competition in their Lamborghini Super Trofeo race car to claim the top step on the podium.
Sanna set a fastest lap time of 1:42.673 during Saturday's first qualifying session to put the #123 MIK Corse SRL car on the front row of the grid for race one. In the second session Stancheris lapped the Italian circuit in 1:39.262 to claim a second-place start in the final race of the weekend.
As the lights went green for race one Sanna charged off the start line, taking the lead. The pursuing pack was unable to catch the Lamborghini test driver, who guided his Super Trofeo race car around the circuit ahead of his Ferrari and Porsche-equipped rivals. He then handed over to team-mate Stancheris, who continued on the pace to cross the finish line first and claim their third victory of the season.
In race two, Stancheris battled with the Vittoria Compet Ferrari 430 in the opening laps, passing for the lead on lap three, but slipping back to second on the seventh lap. Five laps before the pit window opened the safety car was deployed and Stancheris lost the gap he had opened to the pursuing pack. Following a difficult restart he handed the #123 over to Sanna in 13th place, who then picked his way back through the field, moving up to fifth before the chequered flag. Securing a total of 22 points at Vallelunga, Sanna and Stancheris are currently joint fourth in the Italian GT Cup standings.
"Overall it has been a good weekend for us," said Sanna. "Starting from pole, our target was to win and we did. It was an excellent Lamborghini weekend with the Italian GT Cup and the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo racing. Lots of people from the factory as well as Lamborghini fans came to watch, so the win was great for them as well. Obviously we wanted to win the second race, but the safety car period meant we lost our advantage so fifth was the best we could do in the situation.
"Next we will go to Monza and continue to fight for the championship. I think we will be strong and there is a good chance that we could finish off the season on a high."
The finale of the 2010 Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo season took place alongside the Italian GT Cup. Three new champions were crowned, with Mirko Venturi claiming the 2010 Pro Drivers' title, Eugenio Amos secured the 2010 Pro-Am Drivers' honours, while Black Bull Swiss Racing was awarded the 2010 Teams' title.
