MICHELIN LOOKS TO CONTINUE FLORIDA GT1 SUCCESS Pompano Beach-based Champion Porsche and Panoz GTR-1 Compete with Michelin Radials

(GREENVILLE, SC) --- Michelin claimed the GT1 class victory in the Rolex 24 at Daytona in February; swept the GT1 class in the Exxon Superflo 12 Hours of Sebring in March, and now returns to Florida and the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex seeking their third consecutive victory in the Sunshine State. Two Michelin Pilot-equipped GT1 cars will compete in Sunday's USRRC-sanctioned Sports Car Extravaganza.

Andy Wallace and Doc Bundy are slated to drive a Panoz Motorsports GTR-1 and Thierry Boutsen and a co-driver are scheduled to pilot the Champion Porsche 911. Pompano Beach-based Champion Porsche, the largest volume Porsche dealer in the United States, fields a team in select GT events.

"Winning in Florida for the third time in GT competition would be great," said Herb Johnson, Director of Motorsports, Michelin North America. "Michelin Pilot radials have provided great handling and grip on the high banks of Daytona and the long demanding course at Sebring, and we now look forward to proving ourselves on the 2.21-mile road course at Homestead."

Michelin began its North American GT racing season at Daytona when the Michelin Pilot-equipped Rohr Motorsports Porsche 911 GT1 captured the GT1 class victory. Panoz Motorsports drivers Andy Wallace and David Brabham led a Michelin sweep of GT1 at Sebring. The Champion Porsche finished in the runner up position, followed by a second Panoz entry. A Michelin-equipped Panoz also won the GT1 class at Las Vegas last month.

Michelin and Panoz are partnered for the entire 1998 North American GT racing season. They will run in all Professional Sports Car races and in select USRRC events. Last season, the Panoz team won four races, placed second four times and set three records in their race at Sebring.

In addition to its activity in the GT racing scene this year, Michelin North America will supply tires for the Barber Dodge Pro Series. The series is now recognized as the direct path to higher levels of open-wheel competition, in particular the CART Indy Lights championship, itself the Official Development Series of the CART FedEx Champ Car Series.

The Michelin tire program also includes the Skip Barber Racing School, the Dodge/Skip Barber Driving School and the Skip Barber Formula Dodge Race Series.

Michelin, which brought the world the radial tire more than 50 years ago, is the world's largest tire company. It has 22 plants in North America and produces tires for every type of vehicle, from bicycles to the space shuttle. # # #
