Barba-Kaffer (AF Corse), New GT Open Champions Frezza (Kessel) Takes Last-Minute Crown In GTS
Alvaro Barba and Pierre Kaffer (AF Corse) are the new Champions of the International GT Open, after finishing fifth in today's SuperGT Race 2 in Barcelona, while Enrico Toccacelo-Raffaele Giammaria (EdilCris) finished 7th. With a faultless and cautious race, the German-Spanish pair of AF Corse made after having dominated the season and suffering some set-backs in recent months.
Today's race saw a sensational win of the Autorlando Porsche of Richard Lietz and Gianluca Roda, after a close duel with the JMB Ferrari of Collard-Lunardi and with the RCA Ferrari of Cerqueda-Vives in third. Roda-Lietz take second in the championship, ahead of Toccacelo-Giammaria and Narac-Pilet (IMSA), today 9th.
The big surprise came in the GTS race, as championship leader Jean-Philippe Dayraut (Luxury) lost the title even before the race started, for problems in his Ferrari, clearing the way for Marco FRezza (Kessel Racing) who together with Niki Cadei finished second, but took the maximum of points, with the no-point scoring Novadriver Audi R8 of Cesar Campanico and João Figuereido won the race.
Super GT Race
At the start, poleman Parente is passed en force by the Porsches of Lietz and Pilet, with Broniszewski fourth ahead of Giammaria. Battle is fierce and soon Parente and Giammaria passthe Kessel Ferrari and the IMSA Porsche to take second and third behind Lietz. At that moment, Kaffer is 9th. Broniszewski and Christodolou get in contact in lap 5, with the Pole spinning and stalling in the gravel. Also Talkanitsa spins and his car remains in a dangerous position, forcing the safety-car out for 3 laps.
In lap 9, Parente passes Lietz who repasses him immediately after, while Giammaria is right behind to take any opportunity. Behind Christodolou, fourth, Pilet is trying to resist to Pilet. In lap 13, Parente tries a new attack on Lietz at the same place, this time succeding.
With this situation start the driver changes. After the handicaps, Roda leads with 8" ahed of Collard, then Wiser, Cerqueda, Barba, Piquet, Narac, Mullen (who gets a drive-through for speeding in the pit lane), Toccacelo (who had the highest handicap, 30", and is now 10" behind Barba), and Griffin. In lap 20, Toccacelo takes 7th position, but is passed by Griffin soon after. At the top, Collard closes on Roda, but the Italian manages to resist and to win, while Cerqueda passes Wiser for third Barba-Kaffer (5th in the race and 3rd in points) secure the Championship.
The GTS race starts with drama: the championship leading car, with Ortelli, at the wheel is blocked in the grid with a mechanical problem (and so is the RPM Ford of Mortimer), while in the second corner a multiple accident takes away the Ferrari of Livio and the Porsches of Loeb and Spirgi. And it's not over: as also the second Luxury Ferrari, with Makowiecki, loses the lead and is later stopped by mechanical problems.
Armindo, in the Porsche Attempto, leads ahead of the Audi of Campanico, but Cadei, third, is the one scoring most points and at that moment the virtual champion is his team-mate Frezza. After the driver change, the Audi of Figuereido takes the lead and will keep it until the end ahead of Frezza and the quick Vulkan Viper of Bruck.
