AUBERLEN MAKES HISTORY 'TWO-TIMING' IN LAS VEGAS Professional Sports Car Racing's reigning GT3 driver's champion Bill Auberlen added another milestone to his fast-growing resume in the Toshiba Copiers & Fax Nevada Grand Prix on April 26 by becoming the first driver in Sports Car history to win two different classes in the same race. He won GT3, qualifying for and starting the 3-hour, 45-minute race in the No. 10 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 four-door. He then finished in the No. 6 BMW M3 coupe, a former GT3 car that had been modified to GT2 specifications and won its class by four laps.
GT2 'EXPERIMENT' TO CONTINUE AT LIME ROCK While their season continues with this weekend's USRRC-sanctioned event at Homestead, PTG engineers and crew are taking the lessons learned from their GT2 victory at Las Vegas and are preparing the car for Round Three of the Sports Car season at Lime Rock Park (May 22-25) in Lakeville, Conn. "I think we were very fortunate to win in our first GT2 outing," said PTG owner Tom Milner. "It came thanks, in large part, to the misfortunes of the other competitors in the class. We learned a lot, though. For one thing, we need to find about 100 more horsepower in order to be competitive. I don't know if we'll find it on this green earth, or if we'll have to look in some other universe. At any rate, we'll be ready to give it another go at Lime Rock and see what happens."
GT2 VICTORY ENDS PORSCHE STREAK Las Vegas marked the 13th race in the two-year history of Sports Car's GT2 class, and it was the first time a Porsche failed to win the class. The PTG BMW M3 coupe of Andy Pilgrim, Boris Said and Auberlen was fourth overall and finished four laps ahead of the second-place (11th overall) GT2 Porsche of Larry Schumacher and Martin Snow.
THE NUMBERS GAME … The GT3 victory was BMW's 16th, including its last five races in a row … Auberlen scored his 15th and 16th victories in the series in only his 90th and 91st starts. He is currently atop the GT3 driver's points standings in both Sports Car and USRRC after his string of first-place finishes this season … Likewise, BMW is leading the manufacturer's championship, and PTG the team championship, in both series … For Simo, in the No. 10 GT3-winning M3, it was his first win in only his third career Sports Car start, while Duez recorded his third win in his 14th start … The No. 1 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3 of Peter Cunningham and Ross Bentley was second in GT3 (sixth overall) at Las Vegas, PTG's second consecutive 1-2 finish in class.
