DOUBLE TOP FOR NIARCHOS AND MULLEN!
Chris Niarchos and Tim Mullen did exactly what they needed to do at Snetterton this weekend, taking two comfortable wins in rounds six and seven of the 2006 British GT Championship. This brings their victory tally to a fabulous five-out-of-seven so far this year. Race one was a fight from the back after Chris Niarchos had to start from the pitlane. A phenomenal drive by the Greek-Canadian saw the Ferrari slicing through the field all the way up to second place within 10 laps! After the pit-stop Tim Mullen set off in pursuit of Luke Hines in the LNT Panoz, nailing the orange car almost immediately.
He then sailed off into the lead, took fastest race lap, and ultimately took the chequered flag with a very healthy 25-second margin over the Panoz. Race two was a classic flag-to-flag victory for the dynamic duo. Tim started the race from pole, led all the way until the pit-stops, taking another fastest race lap, then handed the car over to Chris who ran smoothly to the flag for win number five of the season so far.
Chris Niarchos: "Well I've had easier afternoons but that was a lot of fun! The fight through the pack yesterday was one of my all-time favourite drives and then, with Tim handing me the car in an astonishingly good lead today, it was a pleasure to jump in and finish the job off to get the double win! We've solved the mechanical problems we had at Mondello and now we're back in business, picking up where we left off, so to speak. We had the pace in the first three rounds, and we've shown it again here, winning with such a good margin."
Tim Mullen: "We certainly made things difficult for ourselves in race one by missing the pit window but the Ferrari was quick here and I knew Chris would do a great job getting through the field. I had the easy job; just catching one car (the Panoz) and passing it for the lead. Race two was just the way you want them to be! I'm not saying it was easy by any means as it was hot out there this weekend and we had to work hard! I want to say thanks to Avon as they have worked very hard for us, and so have the team, over the last couple of weeks to sort out of tyre issues. They pushed hard for us so thank you Avon!"
Stewart Roden: "It's a great feeling to get back to normal! Avon did a fantastic job for us this weekend so a big thank you to them and congratulations to the whole team for getting is back on track!"
