The Balfe Motorsport team suffered its second non-finish in as many races when a throttle failure ended their race at Oulton Park while in the lead this afternoon (Sunday 13 July).
Newark Glass Group sponsored Balfe had dominated the weekend, taking pole position by almost half a second from his nearest rival. A brilliant opening stint saw the team clear of the rest of the chasing field by almost 50 seconds before handing over to team-mate, Jamie Derbyshire.
A fantastic changeover gave the team the gap they needed to cruise to the flag. However, just four laps into Derbyshire's stint he began to have gear selection problems before he had to pull off the circuit at the end of the pit straight with no drive.
A frustrated Balfe was understandably down after the race, but was pleased with his performance over the course of the weekend.
"It was incredibly frustrating to not reach the chequered flag for the second race in a row." He said. "We did everything right this weekend and had the speed and strategy over the rest of the grid, but it is never a simple as that and we struck a little more bad luck again, unfortunately."
Balfe was able to take one small consolation from the weekend, taking fastest lap and a new lap record, for which he will receive a single championship point. A point he knows might just come in useful at the end of the season.
"Championships have been won and lost on single points and although it does not quite make up for not finishing the race, it might just prove critical at the end of the season. We have to go out and find our early season luck once again. We did everything right once again here at Oulton, but just failed to cross the line. We are back on home territory again at the next round at Rockingham, so hopefully we will be able to narrow the gap at the head of the points table." He added.
The Balfe team will be back in action at Rockingham in Northamptonshire on August 2/3.
