County sportscar ace, Shaun Balfe, will be heading to the former Grand Prix venue of Brands Hatch in Kent this weekend (September 27/28) and knows that race victory number seven will give him and driving partner Jamie Derbyshire the 2003 British GT Championship title.
The Newark Glass Group backed racer has had an outstanding season so far, picking up six race victories from nine race starts. Balfe and Derbyshire now lead the drivers table by just four points from their nearest rivals and he is aware that another trip to the top step of the podium is required to lift the title.
"It is going to be probably the toughest weekend of the season but I am really looking forward to it." Says Shaun, "Every time we have taken to the track this year we have aimed to be the fastest and the team have worked incredibly hard to get us here. We know that our closest rivals are going to be right there with us at the weekend, so we will definitely be going for another race win." He adds
A mid-season run of bad luck saw the Balfe Motorsport Team drop to third in the points. A pair of non-finishes and a seventh place meant that all of the hard work early in the year was wiped out. However, a lot of hard work saw the team pick up their early season form again and Balfe is confident as he heads into the final race, but knows that his rivals will be snapping at his heels, as they have done all season.
"We have probably suffered more bad luck than any of our rivals, especially during the middle of the year." He says, "We know that we can do the job and that the other two teams going for the title will be out to beat us, but it will make us more determined than ever to return to the top of the podium."
The team will take to the circuit for the first time at 11:10am on Saturday morning before qualifying takes place at 3:20pm. The race is scheduled to take place at 2:45pm on Sunday afternoon.
