BAD LUCK FOR SIGALSPORT BMW CARS AT WATKINS GLEN!
Los Angeles, California (June 10, 2006) -- The driving trio of Bill Auberlen, Matt Alhadeff and Joey Hand started the epic six hours of the Glen from the 6th position but had to retire after 61 laps because of an accident. Due to the tricky, rainy racing conditions, Matt Alhadeff lost control of his Alhadeff Motorsports / MOTUL / enVista / GlycoMax / Piloti Driving Shoes / OMP / Bosch BMW M3 on lap 62 and his car went straight to the wall causing heavy damage. Alhadeff was very lucky since he was unhurt in that violent crash.
Gene Sigal and Peter MacLeod, co-driving the 04 Sigalsport / Java One Coffee / MOTUL / enVista / GlycoMax / Piloti Driving Shoes / OMP / Bosch BMW machine started from the 12th position on Saturday. Like their teammates, Alhadeff, Auberlen and Hand, the Sigalsport BMW 04 duo was the victim of an accident and had to retire from the six hour race after only 75 laps. Peter MacLeod was driving the 04 car when the accident happened in Turn 1. The car slid from the track and hit the wall. Peter was able to come back to the pit but since the car had suffered too much damage, it became undrivable and unable to race again so the team decided to retire car 04 from the race.
The team enjoyed working for the first time with BMW driver Joey Hand who unfortunately never had a true opportunity in the race to show his impressive talent. This was not the best weekend for the Sigalsport BMW team that was expecting great things from the six hour event. The cars were very well prepared by the crew and the team and drivers had podium ambitions before the race. Unfortunately the rain started to fall early in the week in the Corning area and the racing conditions were not the best for all the competitors involved in the eighth round of the 2006 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve.
This is a weekend to forget quickly for Sigalsport BMW drivers and crew. The 05 team lost one position in the team points and is now ranked 7th and the 04 team is still ranked 12th in points after eight races. Alhadeff and Auberlen also lost three positions in the driver points and are now ranked 8th. Sigal and MacLeod are now ranked 11th in the 2006 driver points.
The team is now repairing both cars before the next back to back races of Mid-Ohio and Daytona. The EMCO Gears Classic at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car course event is scheduled for Saturday, June 24 in Ohio at a racetrack that should be in favor of the Sigalsport BMW M3s. The EMCO Gears Classic will be televised on Sunday, June 25 at 3:00 PM Eastern time.
