Michael Shank Racing third fastest on Friday at Watkins Glen
(Watkins Glen, NY) 2 June 06--Michael Shank Racing got the Sahlen's 6 Hours of the Glen weekend off to a quick start on Friday, with the Flight Options car of Oswaldo Negri and Mark Patterson posting the third fastest time overall after three practice sessions on Friday.
The Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach Lexus Riley of Tommy Constantine, Paul Mears Jr., and Mike Borkowski also had a strong run with the striking new Playboy Racing livery, with a fast lap time of 1:47.131-seconds on the 3.4-mile natural terrain road course.
Due to the circumstances surrounding the Glen race weekend, Grand American elected to set the grid by points rather than staging a qualifying session. Patterson and Negri will start the Flight Options car from eighth on the grid, with the Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach set to take the green flag from the eighth row.
Patterson and Negri have been looking forward to the Glen round, having scored third place at the famed facility last September.
"I'm thankful that Grand Am gave us the track time tonight to make up for what we lost yesterday," said Negri. "I have a great group of people behind me with Michael Shank Racing, and this is a good way to finish out the day today. The Flight Options car was great right off the truck, and we have just been fine-tuning it. It's just a shame that we didn't get to qualify today, but it's a long race and we should be in great shape."
The Watkins Glen event marks the Daytona Prototype debut for Constantine, who last raced at the track in F2000 competition. Despite never having run the long course layout that the Rolex Series is employing this weekend, the Scottsdale, Arizona resident was quickly on the pace.
"Tommy did a great job in the Playboy Racing car today," said team owner Mike Shank. "He set a fantastic time late in the day with tires that had 150 miles on them, so that was an impressive first day for him. Paul (Mears) is always quick here at the Glen, and today was no different. It's too bad we didn't get a chance to qualify today because both cars are quick , but we should be able to move up once the race gets going tomorrow."
The Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen will get underway at 2:30 PM ET on Saturday, and will be carried live on Speed Channel.
