Watkins Glen, NY (October 16, 2003) - Eight events are featured on the 2004 schedule at Watkins Glen International, highlighted by the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, returning on its annual August weekend. While the schedule appears consistent with past years, the historic road course will look quite different when the first green flag falls on the new season. Gone will be the red, black and white signs of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, replaced by the yellow and black of the new NASCAR Nextel Cup Series.
The season opens with Opening Day on May 2, marking the advance sale deadline for all race weekend tickets. Fans can once again take on the left- and right-hand turns of the famed road course in their own vehicles, or take a ride in a pace car. Proceeds for this event will benefit Kyle and Patty Petty's Victory Junction Gang Camp.
The Chemung Canal Trust Historic Races, June 4-6, kick off a month of sports car racing with an International Race of Champions reunion feature, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the all-star series. The month also includes the Porsche Clash, June 11-13, and the Sahlen's Sports Car Grand Prix, June 18-20. The exciting Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series race falls on Father's Day this year, making a trip to the track a great gift for Dad on his special day. In honor of the holiday, The Glen has put together a can't-miss Father's Day package that includes two Sunday general admission tickets and two parade laps of the track in your own vehicle. The weekend isn't complete without the Grand-Am Cup Series, battling it out for road course bragging rights.
The longest-running event at The Glen, the SCCA Glen Nationals, is back for another year July 10-11, followed immediately by the Finger Lakes Wine Festival supported by the Corning Museum of Glass, July 16-18. The Festival will again kick off on Friday evening with the Launch of the Lakes celebration, where we'll crown the King and Queen of the Festival!
New York State's largest weekend spectator sporting event returns August 12-15 with the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series taking center stage on Sunday in the much-anticipated SIRIUS at The Glen. Support races include the Mohegan Sun 150 presented by Pepsi NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series on Saturday and the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series' 250 on Friday night.
Rounding out the season is the largest vintage motorsports event in the United States - the Zippo U.S. Vintage Grand Prix September 10-12 - held in conjunction with the Grand Prix Festival in the Village of Watkins Glen. This year, we'll honor the racing career of 1986 Indianapolis 500 champion Bobby Rahal, with many of the cars that he competed in making an appearance at the event. Rahal, a three-time CART series champion (1986, 1987 and 1992), concluded his driving career in 1998 with 24 career victories and 18 poles, 177 top-10 finishes and 199 top-five efforts. A two-time Driver of the Year, he became the first rookie owner/driver to capture the series title in 1992 as a partner in Rahal/Hogan Racing.
Ticket holders for the 2003 season are reminded to renew their tickets by November 21 through The Glen's ticket office. For the first time, exact ticket renewals will be accepted online and via phone, making it easier than ever to get your tickets.
