Great Results Await Spirit of Daytona at Watkins Glen

Will three times be the charm for Spirit of Daytona at Watkins Glen? This will be Spirit of Daytona, sponsored by Spiralz/Speedcom/Chemcraft, third and final stop at Watkins Glen, NY, for the 2005 race season on September 24. The 09 Pontiac-powered Daytona Prototype (DP) will be competing in its 12th race of the season and is looking to gain some serious series points. The 09 Crawford DP has had an uphill battle all season long.

The frustrating race season has thrown its share of hardship and bad luck to the team, but Troy Flis, co-owner/team manager, is still upbeat about the season. " The 09DP has had a rough season but there have been some successes shining through. Last race at PIR (Phoenix International Raceway), we had a great qualifying session. Usually we use qualifying as tests laps and don't stress too much about times. But at PIR we had the fastest qualifying time of all the Crawfords. We are constantly pushing for a faster car especially now since we have a good handle on the chassis setup," said Flis.

The team has had two top-ten finishes, and expects more before the end of the season. Last year after completing a full season of 12 races the team had a total of four top-ten finishes. Major differences between last season and this season is the competition. The 09DP was still plagued with mechanical malice but the field of competition has gotten bigger making for a challenging series. The team has given the season their all and are waiting for good luck to allow them to race free from mechanical failure. But good things have happened to the Spirit of Daytona in the 05 season. The team has formed a new partnership with team associate sponsor Chemcraft International with the arrival of French Canadian team driver Marc-Antoine Camirand. Camirand had his first qualifying and race start in the 09DP at the Racetickets.com 250 at PIR on Saturday night September 10. Also Doug Goad, co-owner/driver of the 09DP, is still in the lead for the Truman Award by over 200 points.

The frustrating racing season has not discouraged the team. They are in high gear to finish off the season with a few top-five finishes. "We have the potential to be a top-five car every weekend. We just can't seem to shake the mechanical gremlins. I think we have a lot of potential for a strong finish over the next three races. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope that the car is in a good mood and we have no mechanical issues," said Goad.
