Spirit of Daytona Racing Looks for more after Crown Royal 200
WATKINS GLEN, NY, 8 Aug --After a disappointing qualifying session set the No. 09 Porsche V8-Coyote on the ninth row for Friday nights Rolex Sports Car Series Crown Royal 200, Spirit of Daytona Racing could hardly be blamed for thinking that a rain race might be the best conditions for another strong outing with drivers Guy Cosmo and Marc-Antoine Camirand at Watkins Glen. And with a highly variable weather pattern through the weekend, it could just happen that the two hour sprint race could see some precipitation during the Daytona Prototype-only race event just off the shores of Seneca Lake.
The Spirit of Daytona Racing Coyote, which is making the final scheduled Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series race outing of the 2008 season before the team switches focus to the 2009 Rolex season, has shown exceptionally well in low-grip situations during a limited schedule of running this season. Top six qualifying and lead-pack race pace were particularly on display at Homestead Miami Speedway and then again at Barber Motorsports Park.
The sudden downpour during the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course Rolex race also saw the Coyote flourish in the tough conditions before a late-race incident, so there is good reason for the team to look forward in case things to get a little wet come Friday night. But no matter what the conditions, the team will look to be ready to move up closer to the front come the drop of the green.
"There are a lot of tracks where being just two seconds off the pole wouldn't be bad but unfortunately this isn't one of them, so we are starting pretty deep in the pack," lamented Cosmo. "We just have been struggling for grip and the car still isn't as stable under braking as we need it to be so we can be more aggressive at turn in. But who knows, we threw a lot at this car for qualifying and it just didn't deliver the results that we were hoping for. We'll have to wait to see what the weather turns out like for the race because we have some more ideas about what to do if it's dry again, and we know we have a great rain set up as well, so we will see how it plays out."
