WATKINS GLEN, N.Y., Aug. 7 - The DORAN JE4 Toyota is super-fast, right out of the box.
Doran-Lista Racing of Lebanon, Ohio and its lead driver, Didier Theys of Scottsdale, Ariz., proved that in no uncertain terms Thursday afternoon at Watkins Glen International when Theys qualified second in the Daytona Prototype class and third overall in this particular race car's first laps of competition ever.
Theys, who will share the cockpit with Bill Auberlen of Hermosa Beach, Calif., in tomorrow night's Bully Hill Vineyards 250 Grand Am Rolex Series race, was clocked at an average speed of 123.035 mph around the Glen's 2.45-mile short course in qualifying. That was only 0.442 seconds (0.763 mph) off the pole-winning time of the Heritage Motorsports Mustang and 0.241 seconds (0.415 mph) slower than the Brumos Racing Porsche Fabcar that will start second in tomorrow's 250-mile or two-hours-and-45-minutes-long race.
The only two DORAN JE4s in existence at the moment will be side by side tomorrow on the grid, as the Bell Motorsports DORAN JE4 qualified fourth overall and third in class. That car already has three overall victories and five podium finishes in class in the eight events run so far in the 12-race series. It is powered by a Chevrolet engine, while the brand-new Doran-Lista DORAN JE4 #27 has a Toyota powerplant.
Showcasing the results that have made Kevin Doran and this team legends in endurance sports car racing, the Doran-Lista team found almost 2 miles per hour between the first practice session on Thursday morning and Thursday afternoon's 35-minute qualifying session. The team was fourth in class and fifth overall in the first practice session, when the car's fastest lap was run at an average speed of 121.11 mph.
They were even faster in the one-hour practice session Thursday night than they were in qualifying. That time the Bell Motorsports DORAN JE4 was quickest with a 1:09.916 to lead the entire field and the Doran-Lista team was a close second with a 1:11.031.
The Doran-Lista DORAN JE4 Toyota made its maiden shake-down run just last Friday at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Other DORAN JE4s are currently under construction at Doran Racing's headquarters and are available for purchase.
Tomorrow's race starts after NASCAR Winston Cup qualifying concludes, which will be around 6 p.m.
The race will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis on Sunday at 5 p.m. on SPEED Channel.
