Von Moltke Continues To Keep Momentum At Watkins Glen
Has Fourth Top Ten Finish In His Six Races This Season
Wins Jim Trueman Award
Altamonte Springs, FL/June 9, 2010 -- GRAND-AM racing sensation Dion von Moltke wowed racing enthusiasts this past weekend at Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen at Watkins Glen, New York. Von Moltke, who is 2nd place and closing in on first for Rookie of the Year racing the #77 McDonalds/South African Airways/PRNewswire Daytona Prototype of Doran Racing was in the Top-5 all weekend long in each practice session and finished 9th in the race. This was Dion's fourth Top-10 finish out of his six races this season. All of his finishes this season have been in the Top-12. Dion received the Jim Trueman Award that recognize individuals in the Daytona Prototype class who have established their driving credentials in the racing community through their talent and commitment to the sport of auto racing. With his strong showing at Watkins Glen, von Moltke is 2nd in Rookie of the Year points.
"It was a long hot day for the #77 PRNewswire/South African Airways/ McDonald's Doran Racing Ford Dallara, going into the weekend we knew the car would be very good here as Kevin Doran always provides us a great car at Watkins," said Dion. "When we unloaded it was very quick and we attempted to make it even faster with a downforce adjustment but unfortunately we went the wrong way. The car's balance during the race was not as quick as we had hoped but it was still capable to do battle with some of the top teams! The car was best when we had mixed rainy conditions while I was in the car it was raining in some corners and not in others and we had to navigate these conditions with slick tires. This is where our car came to life! I was running on some laps over 2 seconds a lap faster than anyone else! In the middle of the race I did my first triple stint in the car, but I have been working very hard on my fitness and I felt surprisingly good after 3,5 hours in the car. We ended up with another top 10 finish for Doran Racing and have good idea on the setup we will use at Mid-Ohio - the home track for us!"
Despite heavy rain that would have crippled many drivers, von Moltke and Gidley were able to stay competitive with the leaders throughout the race. The team finished a strong 9th and kept the momentum building that Dion has been demonstrating throughout this GRAND-AM season. As a result of this stellar performance, the Doran team is just 1 point out of 8th place in the Championship. Dion is holding steady in 2nd place for Rookie of the Year and is a mere 30 points out of the Top-5 in the Drivers Championship. Winning the coveted Jim Trueman Award named after the legendary racing owner capped off the race for Dion and earned him greater recognition in the racing world from his peers and fans.
Dion is considered one of GRAND-AM's brightest and most dynamic stars. With his skills on the motorway, he has captured fans across the world and led to greater interest in GRAND-AM racing. He is expected to be a major presence in the racing world for years to come and with his performance this year will rank in the pantheon of the GRAND-AM racing world. Throughout this season, von Moltke will be driving the #77 McDonalds/South African Airways/PR Newswire Ford/Dallara.
Von Moltke is headed to EMCO Gears Classic presented by Key Bank at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, OH during the weekend of Jun 18th.
