Edwards qualifies Banner Racing Pontiac GXP.R 4th for Grand-Am Sahlen's 6-Hour at Watkins Glen
Watkins Glen, New York (Friday, June 5, 2009): Paul Edwards qualified the #07 Banner Racing Pontiac GXP.R in 4th position today for Saturday's Sahlen's 6-Hours at The Glen, Round 5 of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16.
"We had hoped for better but we started much further back than 4th in the Rolex 24 and we wound up leading that race after a few hours so we should be OK tomorrow," said Paul Edwards. "Our team is really good and we usually gain time in the pits and this race will have several so I think we will be good tomorrow."
Edwards toured the 3.4 mile Watkins Glen track in 1:52.186 on his first qualification lap and then lowered that time to a 1:51.498 on lap 2. Dirk Werner won the pole with a best lap of 1:51.007 in a Porsche GT3.
Paul Edwards was unable to improve on his best time as a slight misfire slowed the #07 Pontiac at the end of lap 2. It was a reoccurrence of a problem encountered during the practice session earlier in the day.
"Actually it seemed a bit different than this morning," Edwards said of the mysterious engine skip that didn't hurt the performance of the #07 Pontiac GXP.R all that much. "This morning It felt like it was starving for fuel but now it feels like something electrical.
"I think that the Banner guys will figure it all out for the race tomorrow and we will be fine. I like our chances."
Paul kept trying to improve his time and cooled his tires for a lap for a final hot lap but he was fighting a loose condition later in the session and could not improve his time.
"I think we were past the point of our optimum setup by that time and the car was really stepping out on me," said Edwards. "There wasn't much point in wrecking the car so I didn't push it."
