Borkowski takes tenth in VIR qualifying race
(Alton, VA) 22 April 06-- Paul Mears Jr. will start Sunday's VIR 400 from tenth on the grid after co-driver Mike Borkowski finished tenth in Saturday's half-hour qualifying race at Virginia International Raceway in the Graydon Elliott Fusion Racing with MSR Lexus/Riley. Borkwoski started from twelfth on the grid, which was set by championship points, before moving up two positions in the short race, which pays full driver championship points for both drivers.
The race ran under wet conditions, giving the field a considerable challenge as they came to terms with the reduced grip and vision on the 3.27-mile natural terrain road course in southern Virginia.
"Everyone was at half throttle at the start just to make sure they had room and could see something, but really, you couldn't see anything at all out there," said Borkowski. "But, once things got a bit strung out, it was a lot better, but by then we'd lost a lot of ground to the guys up front. Even though we had a pretty fast race car, I was only able to make up a couple of spots. But it's a solid finish and gives Paul tenth on the grid, so we should be strong in the race tomorrow."
The qualifying race was the first for Grand American, and ran under green conditions throughout as the field avoided any problems despite the weather.
"Mike did a good job out there," said Mike Shank. "I was a bit nervous before the race that things would get crazy with the short race that had full points, and was run in the rain, but everyone behaved and now we just have a couple of changes we want to make to the car for tomorrow, and should be in good shape for the race."
