Farnbacher Loles Racing VIR Rolex Series Qualifying Report
After setting two of the fastest times in practice at Virginia International Raceway, the Farnbacher Loles racing team knew they had the suspension dialed in for their two Porsche GT3 Cup cars. In Friday's second session, Wolf Henzler turned a 1:52.864 to lead the GT Class in the #86 Porsche, which he will share with Eric Lux. In the day's final practice, Leh Keen turned a 1:53.902 in the #87, which was the second fastest time in the session and the fastest of all the Porsches. Leh's co-driver is 2007 series Champion Dirk Werner.
In qualifying, the team wanted to be near the front, focusing more on race set-up than outright qualifying speed. The two Farnbacher Loles cars led the Porsche contingent as the two fastest GT3 Cup cars. Leh Keen grabbed the third fastest lap with a 1:52.293, behind two of the Mazda RX-8 racers. Eric Lux turned a 1:53.068, which was good enough for seventh on the grid. Two Pontiacs and another Mazda separate Lux from his teammate.
Keen felt good about his effort and the prospects for the race: "We did pretty well. We have the two fastest Porsches. But the Mazdas are just so quick, we really need to watch our tires trying to chase them. I think we can stay in front of the Pontiacs and we'll lay back a bit. We should be able to keep in touch with the Mazdas and wait for our chance. Let them race each other."
Lux also was confident heading into Saturday's race: "We had a pretty good day. The team gave us a couple of really good cars. Seventh is okay. Last year we qualified in eighth and finished in third. Hopefully we can get another podium this year. And it's great to see Leh and Dirk starting in third."
The Grand-Am Rolex Series Bosch Engineering 250 at Virginia International Raceway takes place on Saturday, April 25th at 2:30pm EST with live coverage on SpeedTV.
