TRG Takes GTO.Rs to Utah in Search of GT Championship
Lead Drivers, Team and Manufacturer Points
Petaluma, California m- TRG is heading to the new Miller Motorsport Park looking to win the Grand American Rolex Series GT drivers, manufacturers and team championships. The nine- hour Discount Tire Sunchaser will take the green flag on Saturday, September 2nd. Long time road racers Spencer Pumpelly and Kris Wilson will assist the TRG regulars as third drivers at Miller this weekend.
Andy Lally and Marc Bunting take an eight point lead into the final race of the season. The duo have been locked in the points battle all season long in their number 65/TRG/GTO/F1 Air/Alpine Bagel/GTO.R. The magic scenario for Lally and Bunting is a fourth place finish to secure the drivers championship.
Teammates Paul Edwards and Kelly Collins in the number 64/iRise/TRG/Pontiac GTO.R are also looking to close out their season in high fashion, currently third in points.
TRG's near dream season has been comprised of Lally and Bunting's four wins with 10 total podium appearances on the year. Edwards and Collins have won three races bringing the TRG total to seven wins and 17 podium finishes between the two cars. TRG is also riding a 22 race podium streak.
Andy Lally, #65/TRG/F1 Air/Alpine Bagel/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "A nine-hour is not the ultimate way to finish the season in my mind, actually a stressful way. We can't afford to be conservative going in, because I am sure that the number 72 car will go flat-out the whole race. We had the opportunity to test there so we have a good handle on the car, we will just have to see what the competition comes up with and be ready to match or better what they throw at us. Spencer is my teammate in the Grand Cup series and my roommate, so he should be a seamless addition to our effort."
Marc Bunting, #65/TRG/F1 Air/Alpine Bagel/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "A lot can happen in a nine-hour race. With a championship on the line a three-hour race would have been my choice. We tested there and we really went well, the track is long, but it won't be a mystery to us. We need to keep doing what we have been doing, running hard and keeping our race very clean."
Spencer Pumpelly, #65/TRG/F1 Air/Alpine Bagel/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "There is a little pressure going in considering Marc and Andy are leading the championship. This will be my first time at Miller, but the team has tested there so I really won't have to worry about setup. I will also be in the Grand Am Cup race that weekend so I will have a lot laps by race time. I have followed the GTO.R around the race track, but have yet to drive it. This is a good opportunity to get behind the wheel of top-flight GT car."
Paul Edwards, #64/TRG/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "Nine-hours is an interesting length as a driver. I have done six, 12 and 24, this will be my first nine. Our car worked great there when we went and tested. We may have a small advantage with all of the turns, but that long straight is all about power. The team really has to work hard to prepare the car in only a few days since Infineon."
Kelly Collins, #64/TRG/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "Miller has way too many turns. I think there is going to be some mayhem in traffic with the DPs. We did some running there, but you're never really sure where you stack-up until the rest of the competition is on the track. The TRG guys usually come up with those answers. Paul and I will be ready since we really had a disappointing run in the other long race -- Daytona."
Kris Wilson, #64/TRG/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "This will be my first series GT start. It is an awesome opportunity and Kelly went to bat for me to help me get the ride. I need to deliver behind the wheel. I have a good number of laps there teaching for Skip Barber, so I know the layout. I will take the conservative approach and go out and do my job to support Paul and Kelly as best I can. I know the TRG guys have a good handle on the setup and the car in general. Kelly and Paul have a lot of time in the GTO.R, so after a few laps I am hoping to feel right at home."
Kevin Buckler, TRG team owner, "Wow a nine-hour race is going to seem like 24 from where I am going to be sitting with three championships on the line. The team is working very hard to make sure there is no stone unturned on car preparation. We have done everything we could in the planning having already tested at Miller, so we really have everything ready going into the final round. Marc and Andy know what they have to do and Kelly and Paul are motivated to close out the season with a strong run."
