The Racer's Group (TRG) heads to America's "Motor City" June 1-2 for the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. The 2.1-mile road course winds its way around a spectacular setting on Belle Isle, an island that sits in America's busiest waterway between the U.S. and Canada with picturesque views of the city's skyline.
While the foray into Detroit is TRG's first, the significance of being in the auto capital of North America is not lost on team owner Kevin Buckler.
"This is a city that understands the automobile and the huge role racing plays as part of that industry and history," says Buckler. "This city has gone through a lot the last several years, and we are delighted to be part of the city's and industry's resurgence."
TRG is poised to make a good first impression.
Drivers Steve Bertheau and Spencer Pumpelly will pilot TRG's No. 67 Sargent & Lundy Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car in an effort to pick up where they left off at a soggy Homestead Miami Grand Prix a few weeks ago. There, the duo along with teammates Emilio DiGuida and Jereon Bleekemolen, had moved rapidly from mid-pack to within striking distance for the win, until the race was stopped for weather, ending their run to the front.
"We had the two best cars in the field that race," said Buckler, who's top finish this year was second by a mere nine seconds at the Daytona 24. "We have been getting better and better each race, and I believe it's about time we make another serious run at winning one of these. The crew has done a great job of getting the cars dialed in the last couple of races under different configurations and weather conditions, while Steve and Spence have driven the wheels off the thing."
"I am really looking forward to being in Detroit and driving on the Belle Isle road course," said Bertheau. "The setting is amazing and the crowd will be huge. It would be a great place for Spence and I to bring one home."
