Didier Theys and Mauro Baldi jump back into the #27 Doran/Lista Judd Crawford for the Nextell 250, the second race of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series this weekend at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. With a disappointing break at the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona earlier this month (broken gearbox), Team Owner Kevin Doran and the Doran Racing crew worked on the car nonstop in preparation for this weekend's race. A visit to Atlanta to test the car has brought the confidence level back up to where it should be to win a race. The team is confident the car will go the distance, allowing Baldi and Theys to revisit Victory lane.
"Last year, we started running really well when we came to Homestead," said Doran. "After placing fifth at Sebring and fourth in Phoenix, we finally had our setup just right, we were the fastest car out there and that's what wins races. This year we have a car that has not reached it's potential. But when it does - watch out. The car will fly."
The Homestead-Miami track, a 2.21-mile, 14-turn road course is a favorite of both Baldi and Theys. They are defending champions of the Nextel 250 in 2000. Last year, the duo of Theys/Baldi had the fastest qualifying lap of 1:10.667 122.263 mph and the fastest race lap of 1:11.463 111.330 mph.
"This is a fun track to drive. Of course it's more fun when you win, like last year," said Theys. "We've worked on more on the setup since Daytona so we are expecting do well. We weren't expected to win last year and we did so who knows what will happen this year."
The Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series Nextel 250 will be broadcast live on Speedvision from the Homestead-Miami Speedway, March 3. The broadcast will start at 2 p.m. EST and is scheduled to run until 4:30 p.m. or until the end of the race if longer due to cautions.
