EXCLUSIVE ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW WITH STARWORKS MOTORSPORT RACE ENGINEER, BILL RILEY:
Starworks Motorsport team owner, Peter Baron, launched Starworks Motorsport over the winter and assembled a dream team of technicians and drivers right after the first race of the 2010 Rolex Series season. Baron added key individuals to his organization with the goal of building a team able to win races and championships. One of the very experienced men that was added to the Starworks organization is Bill Riley who leads the engineering team today and brought not only his experience as a racecar manufacturer but also as an engineer since he definitely is one of the best engineers in endurance racing today. A few days before the next race at New Jersey Motorsports Park, Bill Riley answers our questions and talks about his role and how he fits in the Starworks organization.
You joined Starworks Motorsport as race engineer for the #8 car at Homestead and after 8 races, the team has already scored three podium finishes and Ryan is 2nd in the team driver point standings. How do you feel? "I feel great to be involved. The team has gelled nicely. Good crew. Our pit stops were very strong at Daytona two weeks ago. Car prep has been spot on. We had one issue at Mid-Ohio with a older axle, but that's been it. I'm pretty confident going into the last four races. We should be good at all four".
What is your role within the team and what do you do during the race weekend? "Before the weekend I do the setup and during the weekend I run the sessions. For the race we come up with a plan and I implement it".
Are you on target with your season objective? "Two targets I will say. One is to win a race this year and the second is to keep Ryan Dalziel 2nd in the Rolex Series Driver Championship".
What do you think of Ryan Dalziel and Mike Forest as drivers? "They really work well together. Mike has been doing a great job. I didn't know what to expect with him at the beginning. He is really easy to work with, listens well and has good input. Ryan is very good and is a fighter. It has been a good experience to work with him".
You have engineered top funded teams in the past and Starworks Motorsport is considered a smaller team compared to Ganassi or SunTrust Racing. Is your approach different in terms of race preparation? "With Starworks you need to be a bit more casual. It's been a good experience for me".
The 01 car has already won six races and Starworks is chasing the Ganassi team and trying everything they can to win. What do you think the 8 car needs to beat the 01 car in the last 4 races? "Keep our heads down and work on our car. The 01 car is a tough car to beat".
Knowing the characteristics of the tracks the Rolex Series is going to visit in the next two months, which one do you think will provide a better chance to win for Starworks? "I think we should be very strong this weekend at New Jersey. We should be good at Montreal and Salt Lake City too. The Glen will be our toughest track of the last four".
