Bryan Sellers Teams With RJ Valentine for 2008 Rolex Sports Car Series
Bryan Sellers and RJ Valentine will team together in 2008 to run select Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series races, it was announced today. Valentine, the stalwart racer from Boston, Mass., will team with up and coming sportscar shoe Sellers, whose career has included stints both as a Panoz and BMW Factory driver in the American Le Mans Series, testing in the former Champ Car Series, and a 3rd place finish in the 2008 Rolex 24 at Daytona. The duo will run a partial season in 2008, to include the rounds at Homestead, Lime Rock, Watkins Glen and New Jersey Motorsports Park, among others.
Valentine said, "Teaming up with Bryan for this year is a very exciting step for me. He's proven himself to be a very quick study and a very fast driver in his racing in open wheel and sportscars, and I'm thrilled to try to learn from him this season. Bryan is a meticulous sort of driver - he makes very few mistakes, is really accurate with his feedback and doesn't do any damage to the equipment, which is very important! Already, in the testing we've done together, it's clear we're going to work very well together. Sportscar racing really is a team sport, and having a co-driver with whom you can gel is a large part of the equation for success."
Sellers' career started, like most drivers of his generation, with karting, a subject near and dear to Valentine's heart. After five years of climbing the karting ladder, Sellers graduated to the Skip Barber regional and national series, where he spent two years refining his racecraft and accruing vital setup experience. After three national Skip Barber wins and six podiums in 2000, Bryan was invited to participate in TeamUSA, where he proved himself and moved in 2001 to USF2000 racing. His dominance in USF2000 led to both a points championship as well as an opportunity to drive in the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship, where he came in 2nd, earning a test with the powerhouse Newman Haas Champ Car team. A solid season in Champ Car Atlantic followed, where he accumulated three podium finishes, including 2nd at the Long Beach Grand Prix, and earned further tests with Newman Haas and Dale Coyne Racing. 2005 launched Bryan's career in sportscars, and he jumped in the deep end as a factory driver for Panoz in the American Le Mans Series, which included his first start at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Commenting on his drive for 2008, Sellers said, "It's an honor to be driving with RJ this season - the guy's a legend! We were talking and he mentioned he'd raced the Rolex 24 22 times, I think, which means he's got an abundance of experience. RJ and TRG together have been right in the thick of it in the Grand-Am Rolex Series for the last few years, so I expect we'll be pushing for victories every time out."
The next round of the Rolex Sports Car Series will be run on March 27-29 at Homestead Miami Speedway. Television coverage will be on Speed Channel.
