TRG Qualifies Second and Sixth in Rolex GT at Infineon
Sonoma, Ca. (August 25, 2006) - TRG's Kelly Collins qualified second at Infineon Raceway for tomorrow's running of the Grand American Rolex Series GT race. Teammate Marc Bunting was able to qualify his GTO.R in sixth for a third row starting position.
Kelly Collins took the controls of the number 64/iRise/TRG/Pontiac GTO.R for qualifying and posted a time of 1:38.575. The time was nearly a second faster than their practice time. Together with teammate Paul Edwards, the number 64 TRG entry will roll away from the front row in GT for tomorrow's two-hour-and-forty-five-minute race.
Marc Bunting, together with teammate Andy Lally, are currently leading the GT series points battle in their number 65/TRG/GTO/F1 Air/Alpine Bagel/GTO.R. Bunting posted a qualifying time of 1:39.239 that will see the GT series points leaders start from the third row. The duo were able to unload with a GTO.R that was near the top of the charts all through practice.
Kelly Collins, #64/TRG/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "We had a bad handling car all through practice. The iRise/TRG guys did a little magic for qualifying and really hit on the set-up. I was a little apprehensive my first few laps after our tough practice laps. By the time my confidence was reinstated I had lost some grip on my new tires, but was still able to put together some good laps for a front row effort. We have a good car now, we just need to run a clean race tomorrow."
Paul Edwards, #64/TRG/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "The front is a good place to start. Infineon is a tough place to pass as there is really no long straight to out brake a competitor. The car, Kelly said, was the best it has been all weekend. He showed that in qualifying, stringing together consistent fast lap times in the mid 38s. We need to keep the car at the front and have solid pit stops and team strategy."
Marc Bunting, #65/TRG/F1 Air/Alpine Bagel/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "I had a lot of understeer through the fast esses in my qualifying run. It was the first time we ran on new tires this weekend and we had more rear grip than we anticipated. I had hoped to improve my qualifying time a little more over my practice time, but I think we have a good race car for tomorrow. Our goal is to run a clean race and come out with maximum points, if we can get that 72 car behind us, all the better."
Andy Lally, #65/TRG/F1 Air/Alpine Bagel/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "Marc turned his fastest laps in qualifying, which is always the goal. Unfortunately our competition, the 72 car, is on the pole. The TRG guys put a good car under us right off of the truck for the first practice. We have tweaked it a little to the track conditions, but we have been up toward the top each practice session. We have a decent starting position and like we keep saying we need to run a nice clean race with no mistakes and be up toward the front at the checker."
Kevin Buckler, TRG team owner, "Kelly and Marc both did a good job. Our four GTO.R drivers have not put a wheel wrong all weekend. The TRG crew has stayed on top of track conditions and the cars are really running strong. Marc and Andy are leading the points and they will be focused on scoring maximum points. The 72 car is on pole, good run for them and that should make for an excellent race tomorrow at our home track.
Round 12 of the Grand American Rolex Series will be run at Infineon Raceway on August 26th and will be televised on Speed Channel, taped delayed, on August 27th at 3:00 p.m. ET.
