Michael Shank Racing taking momentum West
(Columbus, OH) 23 August 06--Michael Shank Racing will head West this weekend for the penultimate round of the 2006 Rolex Sports Car Series season as the series debuts at Infineon Raceway with the two-hour Sonoma 250 on Saturday afternoon.
The two-car team has continued to strengthen its position in the championship standings through the summer, with both entries carrying an impressive streak of finishing positions heading into the thirteenth round.
Leading the MSR charge in the championship is the No. 60 Flight Options Lexus/Riley of Mark Patterson and Oswaldo Negri, who opened the season with a run to second place in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, and has five consecutive top-ten finishes heading into the Sonoma 250. The Flight Options entry is currently eighth in the team championship, a scant one-point out of seventh place.
Patterson also holds an impressive 293-point advantage over Rob Finlay in the Jim Trueman Award standings, a championship-within-the-championship for drivers who do not earn an income principally derived from a professional racing career.
Looking to break into the top ten in the points will be the No. 6 Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach Lexus/Riley of Mike Borkowski and Brian Frisselle, who is making his first start with the team. With four top-tens on the trot heading into the weekend, the distinctive black Playboy Racing entry is tied for eleventh in the team championship, with a five-point gap to the top ten.
The run of four double-top ten finishes for the Columbus, Ohio-based team has expectations high for the weekend
"It's giving all of us a lot of confidence," said team owner Mike Shank. "Our cars have been quick in the races, our drivers are doing a great job and keeping out of trouble, and the new Lexus is getting better every round, so we're just excited to go racing this weekend."
The Rolex Series season comes to a quick conclusion with back-to-back race weekends closing out the year. The team will begin preparations immediately following the Sonoma 250 for the season-ending Discount Tire Sunchaser 9 Hour race at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah on Labor Day weekend.
