Defending Daytona Prototype Champ Pruett on the Losing End of IROC Logjam

INDIANAPOLIS (February 19, 2005) -- Defending Rolex Sports Car Series Daytona Prototype Champion Scott Pruett of CompUSA Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates hoped luck would be on his side after drawing the seventh starting spot for Round One of the Crown Royal IROC Series at Daytona. But with horsepower reaching a crescendo in Turn 3 and 36 laps showing on the scoring tower, the Big One dealt Pruett an unfavorable blow, sending the former Daytona IROC winner into the wall with Sebastien Bourdais planted in his passenger side door.

The opening laps saw Pruett take the high side, driving his #01 Gold 500hp IROC machine to as high as third. He held that position until the competition caution on Lap 25 of 40, and earned a bonus point for making his way into the top three at the break.

On the ensuing restart, Pruett elected to start on the inside lane behind the front row, but patience was running thin and the 12-car pack began to dance around the 2.5-mile superspeedway as the lap count dwindled. After falling to fifth briefly, Pruett found himself in a dicey situation exiting the backstretch and when the leaders checked up entering Turn 3, he was a turned around and escorted into the wall by the defending Champ Car titlewinner Bourdais, relegating him to a 10th place finish.

"I really couldn't tell you what exactly happened out there," said Pruett, who stands tied for ninth with six championship markers in his eighth IROC season. "We were running really well in the first segment, and I felt I was in a great position to have a shot at it toward the end. There are just a lot of championship caliber drivers out there all gunning for position. It's too bad we got caught up in the melee and were unable to continue."

The Crown Royal International Race of Champions will resume, April 15th at Texas Motor Speedway with Round 2 of 4 in the fight for the $1,000,000 (US) purse. In the meantime, catch Pruett and teammate Luis Diaz in their CGR Daytona Prototype in Round 2 of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series, the Grand Prix of Miami, March 5th (3:00pm ET).
