Turner and Salama Place Fourth; Strengthen Lead in Championship
WATKINS GLEN, NY, US - 06/19/2004 - Turner Motorsport is celebrating its first-ever Grand Am Cup victory after TMS pilots Tim Pappas and Bill Auberlen scored a win today at Watkins Glen in New York. Will Turner and Don Salama followed their teammates home in fourth. The win vaults Pappas up in the overall Championship to second while Turner and Salama retain their first place positions.
Tim Pappas started the race in the #97 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i. From fourteenth on the grid, Pappas took advantage of the high number of caution periods and restarts to cruise up through the field to eventually lead the race. Bill Auberlen, a late entry for the Watkins Glen line-up, took over driving duties on lap XX. His goal was to stay near the front and put the #97 car back on the podium. When the checkered flag dropped the Turner BMW was in second place and a Lexus IS300 was declared the winner. However, Grand Am officials overturned the win after reviewing television footage showing the Lexus had passed Auberlen under a yellow flag. Pappas and Auberlen were declared the winners.
Tim Pappas, #97 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i: "There is good competition in Grand-Am Cup. It was just another strong finish for Turner BMW."
Don Salama started from the second row in the #95 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i. Will Turner got behind the wheel on lap 29. Both Salama and Turner led the race during their stints behind the wheel. However, a late-race pit stop for fuel dropped them back down the finishing order. They finished in fourth-place in the ST-class and retain their lead in the Championship.
The SPEED Channel will be broadcasting this race beginning on June 27th at 2:00pm ET.
The next round of the Grand Am Cup series will be at Mid Ohio on August 8. However, the Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs Touring Car team will be at Mid Ohio this coming weekend for round three of the SPEED Touring Car Championship.
