ALTON, Va. (June 30, 2001) -- Powell Motorsports earned its second-straight pole as Devon Powell, of Port Perry, Ont., piloted the Sunoco/Encompass-sponsored #11 Corvette Z06 to a blistering 2:03.352 lap time at 95.434 mph around the 3.27-mile, 17-turn road course. Powell beat his best practice time on his first full lap during qualifying, but shattered it again on his second lap to earn the pole position.

Dino Steiner, of Deland, Fla., will start the Steiner/Majestic-sponsored #15 Porsche TT of Motorsport Technologies on the outside pole. Steiner clocked his fastest lap of the qualifying session on his first full lap, but Powell outdid the 2:04.404 lap time by nearly a full second on the next lap.

A pair of Zippo Manufacturing-sponsored Mustang Saleen SRs will start on the second row. TF Racing saw its #47 and #44 Mustang Saleens clock the third- and fourth-fastest times, respectively.

The Mears Motor Coach/Champion Porsche/Fikse/Dynamic Suspension-sponsored #70 Porsche 911 of Speedsource led the Grand Sport (GS) class. David Haskell, of Plantation, Fla., clocked a 2:10.058 lap on his first full lap and then pulled into pit lane and exited the car content with his time. Although several other GS cars attempted to dethrone the Porsche, none were successful. The Hebert/Theetge Motorsports #73 Acura NSX will start behind the Porsche after clocking the second-fastest time in the GS class with its 2:10.464 lap time.

After skipping last weekend's Mosport race, the Chambersburg Waste Paper #34 BMW Z3 Coupe of Villaconn Motorsports returned to action and captured the Sport Touring (ST) class pole position. Grand-Am Cup newcomer Jonathan Bomarito, of Salinas, Calif., piloted the BMW to a 2:14.067 lap. Bomarito, 19, is a well-known kart racer and will begin building his professional auto-racing resume by running with the Villaconn team the remainder of the season.

The second-fastest time in the ST class was recorded by Mike Keravich III, of Shirley, N.Y., in the Power Connector/World Auto Motorsports-sponsored #24 Acura Integra R of Power Racing Team.

The Orangefield Citrus #43 Acura Integra GSR of Planet Earth Motorsports earned the pole position in the Compact 2000 (C2K) class. Wayne Nonnamaker, of North Canton, Ohio, recorded a 2:18.124 lap time, one second faster than the second-fastest Honda of America/Redline Oil/DC Sports-sponsored #69 Honda Civic Si of Honda of America Racing Team.

Competitors will take to the track at 5 p.m., today to begin the Virginia Festival of Speed Grand-Am Cup Three-Hour Race. The race is the seventh of the 10-race Grand-Am Cup season and is in the center of three-consecutive race weekends for the series.
