Spirit of Daytona's Last Race in 2006
With a brand new driver line up, Spirit of Daytona Racing will be campaigning two GTOs in the Grand Am Cup GS six-hour endurance race at the Virginia International Raceway. Craig Conway will be joined with teammate Marc-Antoine Camirand and new team driver Fernando Scattolin in the No. 9 Daytona Mitsubishi/ Diamond Suzuki/ Crane Cams/ Corsa Exhausts GTO. Greg Camp will be joining Mike Weinberg in the No. 10 Rockland Standard Gear/ Crane Cams/ Corsa Exhausts GTO.
Scattolin is no rookie when it comes to racing. This past season he has been racing with the Grand Am Cup team, Blackforest, in their Ford Mustangs. The hot shoe also shares a racing history with fellow French Canadian racer, Marc-Antoine Camirand. They both have been competing in local races throughout Quebec, Camirand in his BMW and Scattolin in his Porsche. This will be Scattolin's first time on the 3.27 mile VIR track and competing with Spirit of Daytona. "I have a lot of experience in the Mustang which is a similar car to the GTO so I don't think there will be too much of a learning curve. This is a technical track but it won't be too hard to learn. I am looking forward to the race weekend and the full six hours," said Scattolin.
Fellow No. 9 GTO driver, Conway is hoping for clear skies this race weekend. "Last spring when we were here the rain never stopped. It seemed like we only had twelve laps without a caution. If race conditions stay dry then we will probably only have a handful of laps under caution. If we keep it clean and run a good pace I don't think there will be many problems. Hopefully we don't make any driver mistakes or have issues during the pit changes. Rumor has it the weather will be cool this weekend, I welcome that."
In the No. 10 car Greg Camp and Mike Weinberg will be reuniting. The teammates' last stint together was at Mid-Ohio in June. Since then Camp has been following Spirit of Daytona closely and is excited to be back in the program. " I am looking forward to getting back into the GTO. It has the power of a Mustang and the handling of a BMW. It's a great car. I raced at VIR in 2001 in a Mustang Cobra. This is a fast track. There really aren't too many passing opportunities and there is no place to rest on the track."
Spirit of Daytona Racing is looking for a top-10 finish to end the 2006 season on a high note. Spirit of Daytona will be campaigning a fleet of three GTOs in the 2007 Grand-Am Cup Series.
