Hopwood Best In Class in Miller Qualifying
Tooele, UT (20 September, 2008)-- Trevor Hopwood dug deep with the No. 76 Fischer Skis Compass360 Racing Acura TSX in qualifying on Saturday to score third on the ST Class grid for round nine of the Grand-Am KONI Challenge season with a flying lap time of 3:16.521 seconds at Miller Motorsports Park.
The lap was his fastest lap of the weekend thus far as he made great use of the cool early morning conditions, the grippy track surface, a great set-up on the car, and a healthy dose of brave driving to set the quickest time among the normally aspirated cars.
At 4400 feet above sea level, the Miller Motorsports Park marks the highest altitude event of the 2008 KONI Challenge season. The thin air robs the normally aspirated-equipped teams of horsepower, while the super- and turbo-charged packages make good use of the extra air being forced into the induction systems.
Hopwood will start Sunday's combined ST and GS class race before turning the Acura over to fellow KONI Champ Adam Burrows as the duo chase their third race victory of the 2008 season.
"It is great to be quickest of all the non forced-induction cars, but we will see what happens once the race starts because I'm not sure everyone showed their full hand here in qualifying," said the defending KONI Challenge Champion. "I'm happy to bring Fischer Skis a good qualifying result out here in ski country. Ray Lee and the Compass360 guys did a great job once again. The car was a little loose, but the track had more grip than it did yesterday so I just tried to make the most of it even though I was on the ragged edge a few times. Hopefully we can win the normally-aspirated class on Sunday!"
Sunday's 2.5 hour race is scheduled for an 11:15 AM local time start.
