Bell and Auberlen Score Second at Miller Motorsports Park
Tooele, UT (17 September 2009) --Matt Bell made it two podium results in a row on Friday evening as he teamed with Bill Auberlen for a thrilling second-place finish in the Utah 200 at Miller Motorsports Park in round ten of the Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge. The second place finish backed up his victorious race at Trois Rivieres in August and marked Bell's fifth podium appearance of the season.
Driving the Turner Motorsports No. 96 BMW M3, Bell qualified third on the combined GS and ST-class grid with a fast lap time of 3:09.997-seconds on the 4.4-mile circuit outside of Salt Lake City. Bell, who played the closer in the two most recent KONI Challenge events, returned to his role as the race-opener on Friday.
Much as he'd done in the race winning-opening effort at Daytona, Bell kept the pace in the front pack before turning the car over to Auberlen near the mid-point of the event.
"I just was trying to save as much of the car for Bill as I could and save as much fuel to give us more options with our strategy," said Bell. "So it went pretty much exactly according to plan for the first half."
After Auberlen took over the controls, the race went to yellow flag conditions once as the No. 96 chased yet another Turner Motorsport victory at the Utah facility. But after a long battle into the desert night, the yellow and blue win streak was broken as the race came down to a horsepower duel.
"That was an awesome race to watch and even though we didn't get the biggest trophy tonight, this was good for the points," said Bell. "The Mustangs could just motor down the front stretch and even though Bill gave them a great fight, there was nothing he could do without crashing the leader out. It's great to get back on the podium and hopefully we can close out the KONI season with a strong finish at VIR."
