KONI Championship leaders Hopwood and Burrows hungry for points at Miller Bringing podium momentum out West for big show on Speed Channel
(Tooele, UT) 12 September 07-- Adam Burrows and Trevor Hopwood are hoping that the twists and turns-all twenty four of them--of Miller Motorsports Park's 4.5-mile circuit play to their favor as the duo look to grow their slim four-point advantage in the KONI Challenge ST Class Championship this weekend.
Friday afternoon's two and a half hour race on the 4.5-mile natural terrain road course is the first combined ST and GS class race since July for the series and will be carried on a tape-delay basis on Speed Channel.
Burrows and Hopwood, who both have experience on the circuit, have a few things in their favor heading into the weekend.
Turner Motorsport scored victories in both the ST and GS classes in the KONI debut at Miller last year, and the team is hungry to help power the No. 95 back into the winners circle this year.
The KONI rookie pairing are also bringing some momentum out West, turning a potentially disastrous run into a podium with a third place finish at Trois Rivieres after a small issue forced them to pit much earlier than anticipated.
"I've run out at Miller before and I think we should be pretty good with how much time we spend in the corners because the car is so well balanced," said Hopwood. "The only thing I'm not all that excited about is that long front stretch because the Acura-engined cars will scorch us all the way down that. It will probably help them out in traffic as well. But we know anything can happen, so we'll see how the race plays out."
Rookies aren't expected to be contending for championships in their first season out, but like Lewis Hamilton has shown this year, when big talent is paired with a good team, anything can happen. And with just two races remaining in the 2007 season, Burrows and Hopwood are firmly focused on the task at hand.
"There's no question it's crunch time but Trevor and I are just trying to take it race by race and focus on finishing consistently well," said Burrows. "I think the altitude might exaggerate the power deficit we have, but we know that the BMW handles great in the twisty bits."
And while it isn't causing the same amount of intrigue as the possibility of Mr. Ashley Judd moving to stock cars, the rumors are true that Hopwood recently tested a Late Model Stock car.
"That was a lot of fun, but I think I'm going to stick to the road racing for now," smiled Hopwood.
