MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO Travis Walker is coming off a successful 2006 attack on the Grand Am Cup ST class championship. Walker has proven he has the speed necessary to claim the championship in 2007, which has been renamed the Koni Challenge Series after qualifying his Kensai Racing Acura RSX in the top five in eight of the ten events last year.
"On one hand, it was a very good year," Walker said of his 2006 season. "Our speed and qualifying efforts were well rewarded, but the Grand Am Cup is very, very competitive and it was our first full season and we had a lot to learn. We had different issues plague us in the races and that meant we didn't have the kind of results that our speed and qualifying position would indicate we should have had."
For 2007, Kensai Racing will expand to a three car team, with Walker being the lead driver responsible for leading the team and developing the team's new Acura TSX. The TSX and the introduction of CPM Centres for Pain Management and the continuation of Loft Transportation as sponsors have Walker excited and ready to win in 2007.
Walker considered moving up to the GS class this year but felt he still had some unfinished business in ST. "Kensai Racing puts a great car together and will give me the best opportunity to win a ST class title this year."
Top GS team Blackforest had expressed interest in Walker and as a result they have agreed to campaign in two races in the 2007 season to start his next level development. "I am thrilled to be even talking to Blackforest and look forward to learning from them this year." One of those races will be in Mosport when the Grand Am Koni Challenge series comes here in mid-June. Walker said, "To run the Blackforest Mustang GT at Mosport, my home track, will be awesome. I will be running both classes that weekend and to have the opportunity to win here at home in front of family, friends and my sponsors is just too good to imagine."
Walker starts the 2007 season in the series opening at Daytona and he is confident in his team and his new mount.
