Devon Powell and Doug Goad won the Grand-Am Cup race at the Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio in the Powell Motorsport Corvette with a late pass of the Doncaster Racing Porsche GT3 Cup car of Scott Maxwell and David Emperingham. The Corvette passed the pole-sitting Doncaster car with just a few laps remaining, and stayed close after the pass. Unfortunately, the Porsche fell off the pace as it passed under the white flag and faded to finish 30 seconds behind the overall and GS I class winner. The two top finishers completed 89 laps over the 2.5 hour timed format race, sharing the lead lap with only one other car, the TF Racing Mustang Saleen SR of Todd Snyder and Gary Smith, third in GS I.
The GS II class battle was close in the late stages as well but the winning (8th place overall) Mustang Cobra R of Shreiner Racing's Jeff Lapcevich and John Shreiner seemed to have the ability to maintain a small lead, despite great pressure from the BMW M3 of Terry Borcheller and Forest Barber over the last hour of the race. Lapcevich and Shreiner's Ford crossed the finish line just 1.5 seconds ahead of the BMW.
First in the ST I class, 12th overall, was the Honda of America Racing Team Acura RSX of Pete Halsmer and John Schmitt. The lead HART car had no challenge from the second place car of their HART Acura teammates, Kevin Adams, Shawn Allen and Dave Roush. Halsmer and Schmitt won over their car's twin by over 30 seconds and had the rest of the ST I field covered by more than a lap.
In ST II another fierce battle was fought for the win as the Acura Integras of Bill Fenton Motorsports (drivers William Fenton and Bob Beede) had to respond to a late challenge from the team of King Motorsports (Wayne and Will Nonnamaker.) The Nonnamakers stayed close to eventual winners for the second half of the race and showed their hand at the end. With two laps to go the two cars were bumper to bumper, but the Fenton team pulled away for a 9 second victory. While this battle went on seven laps behind the overall winners, they were clear of the rest of the ST II field by two more laps.
