HRPworld.com Racing looks to repeat 2001 Acura victory.
North Canton, OH -- The Phoenix Grand-Am Cup race will be in a new unique split format with the Sports Touring I & II being featured in their own race.
HRPWorld.com Racing will hope to take advantage of the increased exposure by repeating their victory from last year. Last year the #41 STII Acura Integra was not only leading the entire STII class, but the entire STI class as well until the last three laps when the STI winning Integra finally passed Nonnamaker. This year, with the races being split into separate 250 mile races for the Sports Touring classes (STI and STII) and the Grand Sports classes (GSI and GSII), the HRPWorld.com Racing Team will have a shot, although not a very likely one, of winning overall with their Integra LSs.
Drivers Wayne and Will Nonnamaker were driving the winning #41 Integra in a spirited win last season. Currently the two brothers have racked up two second place finishes in the first two rounds of the season. Series rookie driver Tony Nuzzo will be reunited at Phoenix with his Daytona teammate - Don Velcio.
"I really like this track," said Will Nonnamaker. "It is a very busy track, and I have fond memories of it from last year. This will be the first race where the STI and STII cars will have their own separate race, so it will effect our pit strategy slightly. It will be a lot more exciting though as we will not have to contend with being passed by the GS cars, and being held up by some of the heavier GSII cars in the turns."
In addition to the #41 and #42 STII Acura Integra LSs, the HRPworld.com Racing team has decided to take advantage of the split race format to unveil their #40 King Motorsports Acura Integra Type R. The Type R runs in the Sports Touring I class and will be racing for the overall win.
"We are very excited about our new expanded effort," states Crew Chief Mike Thomas. "The Acura Integra Type R is a proven, race-winning package. Acura's mission is to win the Sport Touring I & II Manufacturer's Championships. Hopefully we can do our part in both classes to make this a reality."
Drivers for the #40 King Motorsports Type R have not been finalized yet. Expect an announcement next week regarding drivers for the Integra.
Further support for the S/T I & II efforts include AEM, Denso, Hawk Brake, Mugen, Red Line Oil, and TheRaceSite.com
The Grand-Am Cup race will air on the Speed Channel on Saturday - May 4th at 5:00 PM.
