Nick Wittmer ends up 9th in Mosport
Mosport Raceway, Ontario.-- Nick Wittmer and teammate Glen Bocchino didn't have a trouble-free race this weekend at Mosport International Raceway, the sixth round of the 2007 Grand-Am Koni Challenge. The 22 year-old driver brought home the #31 I-Moto Acura TSX in ninth place but ran as high as second in the 400 km/2:30 hours race, had the quickest lap in the race and fought hard until the later laps when he had to pit twice for fuel. He was the big story in the race but ran out of luck and ends up in ninth place. Father Patrik and son Nick agreed this was the best possible Father's day gift.
"Mosport was indeed like coming home, smiled Nick. I've never been that confortable in a race car. I felt nothing could stop me. I took the I-Moto Acura TSX around the 30th lap when Glen pitted on a full course yellow. I went from last on the track, 40 seconds from the lead, ran the race fastest lap, up to seventh in the next stint when there was another full yellow. But the crew decided to leave me out there. I started to race with Pierre (Kleinubing) for the lead and our cars touched at one point: : I had to drift sideways into turn two. I recovered the car and from then Pierre and I just took off for the next 20 laps. I had to stop for fuel with only 12 minutes left in the race. But the gas filler did not work well and I had to come in for another splash. Meanwhile Pierre ran out of gas and I managed to complete the event on the lead lap in 9th place."
"The team took a chance when they keft me on the track. That would have been a clear win. Even if I had come in for more fuel on the second full yellow, I could have won the race because my car was so strong. But that's racing and we have to put this behind and get ready for Mid-Ohio this coming weekend. I will remember that Mosport round for a long time."
