Automatic Racing Finishes 9th in Mont-Tremblant 250

VILLE DE MONT-TREMBLANT, QUEBEC- Jep Thornton and David Russell drove the No. 09 Automatic Racing BMW M3 to a finish of ninth in the Mont-Tremblant 250, round four in the Grand-Am Cup season. The 250-mile race was held on Saturday, May 22.

During the practice day on Thursday, Automatic Racing suffered a setback when motor problems developed. The team was forced to swap to the backup motor for qualifying and the race on Saturday.

Thornton qualified ninth among the field of 49 cars with a time of 1:49.831 around the 2.65-mile Mont-Tremblant circuit. He also started the race, while Russell drove the final half and took the checkered flag in ninth.

"We kept it out there," commented Thornton. "There was a lot of attrition, but we stayed out and clicked off laps. My stint was good. The car felt good other than being down on power. The setup and handling was perfect; the car was the best I've ever had it. It was just fun driving."

"The team never ceases to amaze me with how they can get things done in such a short time," said Russell. "They did a full motor swap in about four hours. The chassis was really good. We unloaded and made almost no changes to the setup. I don't think anyone had an overall package that could handle as well as ours could. However, the thorn in our side was not having a motor that was up to par. A lot of different cars led the time sheets. There is no comparison for the level of competition this year."

The next race for Automatic Racing will be The Glen 250 at Watkins Glen on June 19.
