VILLE DE MONT-TREMBLANT, Quebec- After winning the Grand Sports II pole and finishing fifth in last week's Grand-Am Cup race at Mosport, Automatic Racing hopes to continue their success as they head to Mont-Tremblant for this weekend's Mont-Tremblant 250.
Jep Thornton and David Russell drove the Automatic Racing BMW M3 at Mont-Tremblant for the first time during the Grand-Am Cup race there in 2002. It was only the team's third race, but they proved their potential by driving to a ninth-place finish in Grand Sports II.
Automatic Racing will be aiming for the top of the podium this weekend in one of the most competitive classes of the series.
"Grand-Am has done such a great job equalizing the cars," commented Russell. "So many different manufacturers are capable of winning the race- BMW, Nissan, Acura, Porsche. Anyone could have won last week, and this weekend will be no different. The way the rules are, anyone could win."
Both Thornton and Russell are up to the challenge and look forward to their second race weekend in Canada.
"I think we really accomplished a lot at Mosport," said Thornton, who spent the week in between races in Germany. "To get the pole the first time I competed in the E46 M3 and then finishing fifth was great, and I think we'll carry that momentum through to Mont-Tremblant."
"I love Mont-Tremblant. It's so challenging," noted Russell. "It's got high-speed, mid-speed and low-speed corners, and a lot of blind turns."
Qualifying for the Grand Sports classes will be held on Saturday, September 20, from 11:00-11:15 a.m. The Mont-Tremblant 250 will start that afternoon at 2:25 p.m.
