TRG Expands To Three Cars for First KONI Challenge Race in New Jersey
PETALUMA, Calif. -For the first time since the 2008 Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series season-opener at Daytona International Speedway in January, TRG will field three Porsches in Sunday's inaugural KONI Challenge Series race at New Jersey Motorsports Park's Thunderbolt Raceway.
Co-drivers Duncan Ende and Spencer Pumpelly will share the No. 39 Carlsen Porsche/The DigiTrust Group/Adam's Polishes/Fox River Coffee Porsche 997 as they have done throughout the 2008 KONI Challenge season. Full-time TRG driver Scott Schroeder will co-drive the No. 41 Carlsen Porsche/Cohen Financial/Wolf-Tec Inc./www.WTInc.com/Ludwig-Motorsports Porsche with Peter Ludwig for the sixth time this season, while TRG Rolex Series driver Tim George Jr. will make his first KONI Challenge appearance of the season in the No. 40 Carlsen Porsche/TRG Porsche 997 with co-driver Bryan Silas. All three cars will compete in the Grand Sport (GS) class.
"This is shaping up to be a great weekend for us," said TRG team manager Jason Myers. "The guys have been working hard getting the cars up to 110 percent and the drivers are well prepared. It's a great facility with a great track layout. Lots of high speed 'flat out' sections as well as some good technical corners and elevation changes thrown in. It's got a great track surface and it gets a little skinny in places - it should be an interesting and fun race! After our bad luck at Trois-Rivieres, everyone is ready to bounce back and have an Iowa repeat, but this time with a 1-2-3 finish!"
Schroeder is the only driver in this weekend's TRG driver lineup to visit Victory Lane in the KONI Challenge Series this year, as he co-drove to a victory at Iowa Speedway earlier this month with Andy Lally. Schroeder ranks fourth in the GS class with 49 laps led and is currently 13th in the GS driver standings with 133 points. He has finished inside the top 10 in three of his seven starts this season.
Ludwig, meanwhile, heads into the New Jersey weekend looking to build upon a season-best result of ninth in the No. 41 machine alongside Schroeder at Barber Motorsports Park last month. Ludwig is currently 14th in the KONI Challenge MESCO Building for the Future Rookie of the Year Award point standings despite missing two races. The No. 41 team is currently seventh in the GS team standings.
Pumpelly and Ende have already visited the podium once this year with a second-place performance in Round 2 at Lime Rock Park in May, but would love to move up one step this weekend at Thunderbolt Raceway. The duo has finished inside the top 10 in three of their seven races together this season. Ende is currently 14th in the GS driver standings with 130 points, while Pumpelly is 20th with 116 markers owing to the fact that he did not drive the required amount of time at the Iowa Speedway race earlier this month. The No. 39 team is currently 13th in the GS team standings.
In the No. 40 Porsche, George-who has competed full-time in the Rolex Series with TRG throughout the 2008 season-will be making his first KONI Challenge Series appearance since 2007 this weekend. He joins forces with KONI Challenge newcomer Silas, who brings previous experience from the ARCA RE/MAX Series and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
The weekend schedule includes a promoter test day on Thursday, August 28, followed by practice and qualifying on Friday and Saturday. The race, which is slated for 112 laps (250 miles) or two-and-a-half hours, whichever comes first, will take the green flag at 8:45 a.m. ET on Sunday, August 31.
