LEXINGTON, Ohio (June 9, 2001) -- A pair of Porsches earned spots on the front row for Sunday's Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series three-hour race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The Mears Motor Coach/Champion Porsche/Kikse Dynamic Suspension-sponsored #65 Porsche 911 Supercup of the Speedsource team captured the pole position. Sylvain Tremblay, of Pompano Beach, Fla., led the field and Super Grand Sport (SGS) class with a 1:32.466 lap time at 87.911 mph.

"If there's any credit that needs to be given for the pole, it has to go to my co-drivers," Tremblay said. "Selby Wellman owns the car and we let him get a lot of laps in during practice. He shakes it down. David Haskell is the chief technician and he just knows what to do to the car to get it set up right. All I have to do is get in and drive it."

Starting beside Wellman will be the Majestic/Steiner-sponsored #15 Porsche TT of Motorsport Technologies. Dino Steiner, of Deland, Fla., clocked a 1:33.320 lap at 87.107 mph to earn his spot on the front row.

Both the second and third rows will be filled with Corvettes. The Phoenix Pontiac-Buick-GMC-sponsored #35 Corvette of Phoenix American Motorsports will share the second row with the Sunoco/Encompass-sponsored #11 Corvette of Powell Motorsports. The KAC Technologies #93 Corvette and Mallett Cars-sponsored #98 Corvette of MTI Racing will start on the third row.

Michael Baughman, of Clear Spring, Md., led the Grand Sport (GS) class during today's qualifying in the Utility Supply Company-sponsored #45 Pontiac Firebird of Mike Baughman Racing. Baughman recorded a 1:38.368 lap at 82.636 mph to earn a spot on the sixth row. Robert Julien, of Toronto, Ont., was closely behind in the Sunoco/Denon-sponsored #19 Porsche 993 of Fiorano Racing with a 1:38.665 lap time.

The Lear/BBS-sponsored #72 BMW Z3 Coupe of Team Spartanburg clocked the fastest time in the Sports Touring (ST) class with Steve Pfeifer, of Gig Harbour, Wash., recording a 1:40.315 lap at 81.033 mph. Andy Lally, of Northpoint, N.Y., will start behind Pfeifer in the Team Lexus #2 Lexus IS 300. Lally is doing double duty this week, driving in both the Rolex Sports Car Series and Grand-Am Cup.

The Compact 2000 (C2K) class was led by Mike Fitzgerald, of Fountain Hills, Ariz., in the CompTech Sport-sponsored #42 Acura Integra GSR of Planet Earth Motorsports. Fitzgerald clocked a 1:42.395 lap at 79.387 mph. Bryan Johnson, of Marysville, Ohio, earned the second spot in the C2K class with a 1:42.439 lap in the Redline Oil/DC Sports-sponsored #69 Honda Civic Si of Honda of America Racing.
