Owen Trinkler Mid Ohio Race Preview
RSR Motorsports and their three-car Mini Cooper S squad goes into this weeks' round of the 2009 Koni Challenge Series season with high hopes after rebuilding one of their cars for a full assault at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course. Watkins Glen saw only two of the normal three entries after having to rebuild one of the cars following a significant shunt at the Lime Rock Park round of the series.
Team driver Owen Trinkler was a last minute substitute at Watkins Glen in what turned out to be a positive for the team as he led nine laps in his Cruise America Mini Cooper S. With no radio and in the midst of lap traffic, Trinkler was unaware he was in the lead as the field circled under yellow flag conditions. Following the rest of the ST pack around the lead GS Class cars, he was then penalized by series officials for the error when he too went past the rest of the field. What followed was going from the lead to a 20th place finishing position and one lap down after the penalty was enforced.
The team has made strides to ensure the radio won't fail them this time out in what should be another run to the front for Trinkler, his co-driver Randy Smalley and the #197 entry. The team held pole position in this event one season ago before leading some 30 laps before the rain equaled the playing field for the balance of the ST class field.
Of the event Owen states; "We all enjoy racing at a true drivers' circuit like Mid Ohio. There are a lot of options and it's a track that the team and I have worked very hard to be fast at." The team has shown glimpses of what could be this season as Trinkler mentions, "We've had some good races, but just haven't finished where we felt like we should have. This weekend is one of the ones we would like to highlight on the team schedule by leaving with a trophy at the end." Trinkler and his RSR Motorsports team mates have led four races in the 2009 Koni Challenge Series, as just one indication of how strong a squad the team has put together this season.
