Automatic Racing ready for Mid-Ohio after problems at Watkins Glen.
LEXINGTON, Oh. - Automatic Racing has been busy during the one-week break in the Grand-Am Cup Series schedule, concentrating on getting the No. 09 BMW M3 ready for competition at Mid-Ohio after a disappointing weekend at Watkins Glen.
Automatic Racing drivers Jep Thornton and David Russell were looking forward to Watkins Glen, where the Grand Sports II team debuted in 2002. After setting the quickest times during a practice day early in the week, however, motor problems developed that prevented the team from racing.
Despite the disappointment, Automatic Racing got to work on repairing the motor and getting the BMW ready for the Grand 200 race at Mid-Ohio, June 27-29.
Automatic Racing was second in points and gaining on the class leader prior to Watkins Glen. They are now sixth, and have a new determination to put the Automatic Racing BMW M3 on the podium in order to stay in the points chase.
"We've proven in the past that our team handles challenges like this well," commented Thornton. We were last at the start of the race at Barber, but we didn't give up and finished third. Our car will be stronger than ever for Mid-Ohio, and we will begin to earn back the points we missed last week."
Russell is confident that Automatic Racing has a chance of getting back on the podium at Mid-Ohio. "It's one of my favorite tracks. I ran there in 1998 in a Grand-Am Cup car, and we set the fastest lap of the race. Mid-Ohio is a combination of Barber and Watkins Glen, and our car goes well at both tracks."
Qualifying for the Grand Sports 200 race will be held on Saturday, June 28, from 11:25-11:40 am. The 200-mile race will be held on Sunday, June 29, at noon.
