Dean Martin stormed to the pole position for Friday's Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge season-opening Fresh from Florida 200 at Daytona International Speedway. Martin, who shares his No. 59 Rehagen Racing Ford Mustang GT with Kenny Wilden, posted a best lap time of 1:59.555, nearly a half-second faster than the Automatic Racing BMW M3 of Jeff Segal, who wound up second quickest in the Grand Sport category.

"Getting the pole here in Daytona was our first goal, and of course winning the race tomorrow is our ultimate goal," Martin said. "Our lap out there today was magic. The way our Mustang handled and performed was just perfect. We've worked really hard during the off-season and we want to show everybody that we're the best. I think our team can carry today's success over into tomorrow's race."

Matthew Bell in the No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW was third, while Jack Roush Jr.'s Mustang and the Duncan Ende-driven Porsche rounded out the top-five overall and in GS.

In the slower, but equally exciting Street Tuner category, Andrew Aquilante claimed the pole after turning a 2:08.694 lap time around the 3.56-mile roval. Aquilante and co-driver Kristian Skavnes in the No. 111 Subaru Road Racing Team Subaru Legacy will be in prime position to attack in what is typically an action-packed race.

"It was pretty good," said Aquilante of his pole-sitting lap. "The Subaru Spec B 2.5 liter was running really good. I was just trying to eek out a pole behind another car coming through the tri-oval and got a pretty good draft of him and put together a good lap."

The 200-mile or 3-hour Fresh From Florida 200 gets the green flag at 1:45 p.m. Friday.
