Ludwig and Schroeder Team Up with TRG in Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series
61 TRG GS for March 12 release PETALUMA, Calif., March 12, 2008 - When the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series Grand Sport (GS) class resumes on Monday, May 26, TRG's No. 41 Cohen Financial Porsche 997 will have a different driver lineup than it had in January's season-opening Fresh From Florida 200 as the team announced today that Scott Schroeder will be joined by sports car and open-wheel standout, Peter Ludwig.
Ludwig began his racing career not long ago, battling in the Skip Barber Formula Dodge open-wheel series. In his first full series campaign (2003) he finished an impressive second overall to championship-winner and current Indy Racing League IndyCar Series standout Marco Andretti. Ludwig went on to finish second again in the 2004 Formula Dodge championship but won Regional and Masters championships in 2006. He has also experienced Formula Renault and Star Mazda competition prior to his 2006 sports car racing debuts in both the KONI Challenge GS class and Rolex Sports Car Series GT competition, as well as a test in the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Daytona Prototype.
Ludwig brings an impressive KONI Challenge resume with him to TRG. The German-born racer who now makes his home in New Paltz, N.Y. co-drove to victory in his KONI Challenge Series debut alongside Spencer Pumpelly at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca last May. In his second and final start to date at Lime Rock Park, Ludwig teamed with Pumpelly to finish second.
"I am going into the 2008 KONI Challenge year feeling better and fitter then I ever expected, both physically and mentally," said Ludwig. "I have worked hard on the physical aspects of being a driver, knowing that I will be partnered with an extremely talented and competitive co-driver in Scott. Combining that with the proven track record of (TRG owner) Kevin (Buckler) and the entire TRG team, I couldn't ask for more. I know we can be a force in this year's series. We have a great team that certainly does not lack spirit, passion or talent. All we need is some luck and we should be in contention for the championship. It will be a great year and we plan on being in the front."
Ludwig will drive in a total of six KONI Challenge Series events alongside Schroeder in the No. 41 machine, with Andy Lally-who is focusing most of his attention on driving the TRG Motorsports Chevrolet in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2008-slated to co-drive with Schroeder in the remaining events. Schroeder and Lally charged from last on the starting grid to finish eighth in the 2008 season-opener at Daytona.
Schroeder's racing career began at the age of 15 in the Jim Russell USA series, in which he recorded numerous podium results and a few race victories. Schroeder then moved into the Formula BMW USA series, which he credits as a key step in his development as a professional racer. Schroeder also had one test day in an AER-powered Lola in the American Le Mans Series LMP 1 class.
The 19-year-old Schroeder returns to TRG for his second consecutive full-time season in the KONI Challenge Series and earned the best result of his young career at Daytona in January, topping a previous best of 10th at Mid-Ohio last year. The youngster also competed in the Rolex 24 At Daytona for TRG in the No. 68 Porsche GT3 alongside co-drivers Michael Auriemma, Michael Gomez, John Mayes and Brent Milner.
"I am very excited being with TRG for my second year in the KONI Challenge Series," Schroeder said. "Last year I learned a ton, and this year I hope to build off of what I learned and go for the championship. I couldn't have better teammates. Peter Ludwig will be my teammate for a majority of the races. Peter and I share the same goal for the season which is to win the championship. Andy Lally will fill in for Peter in a couple races here and there. The team has been working super hard during the off-season so I know we will have an excellent car."
"I am thrilled to have this potent combo on board," added Buckler. "Scott has really shown strong talent and excellent judgment these last two seasons and is poised to be one of the top young professional drivers in the series. Peter will really add an exclamation point to the team because he is fast in everything he drives and really fit and committed. He has experience on all these tracks and I expect to see this car battling for wins and podiums at every event."
Pumpelly and Duncan Ende co-drive TRG's No. 39 The DigiTrust Group/Adam's Polishes Porsche 997 in the KONI Challenge Series, with Bryan Sellers and Daniel Di Leo sharing the team's No. 42 Maxwell Paper Co. Porsche 997.
